Therefore, the scene sets a grounded tone. If you have not yet read my first P.E.N.S.I. lesson, please do that first, because it will help you connect these layers with ease.

My own method after decades of reading and teaching tarot, P.E.N.S.I. relies very little on memorization and heavily on association. When you naturally associate things, you don’t have to rely on memorizing keywords for 78 cards. Reading effectively will come much more naturally to you.

Ace of Pentacles, 1st Layer of Context: Position

Position creates the first layer of context in any spread. However, we are not working with spreads yet. We will cover spreads later in this series, and then we will apply position like pros. For now, simply remember that position matters, and we will return to it when the time is right.

2nd Layer of Context: Element is Earth

This card belongs to Pentacles, so the second layer of context is Earth. Earth rules social ties, family life, and money. Always money, because money threads through family and social systems. It also covers work, health, resources, and real outcomes. Therefore, when The Ace of Pentacles (or any other pentacles) appear, expect a material angle. Repeat after me while looking at the card: social, family, money … always money.

3rd Layer of Context for Ace of Pentacles: Numerology of One

Aces equal one, so the third layer of context is beginnings. Think fresh starts, raw energy, and the start of change. Now combine numerology with Earth. The Ace of Pentacles signals a new chance tied to money, work, or family stability. Therefore, I watch for offers, seeds, doors, or tools that kick off growth. Fourth Layer of Context: Symbolism

Symbolism expands meaning, so I study the hand from the cloud, the golden coin, and the garden gate. The hand with the coin dominates the scene. Therefore, I read it as an offer appearing from nowhere. I expect a practical gift, a small windfall, or a paid debt. Now connect symbol to earlier layers, and the Ace of Pentacles becomes a clear sign of new material opportunity.

Fifth Layer of Context: Intuition

Intuition binds the layers into a single message. I pause, breathe, and listen. Often, the Ace of Pentacles shows a job lead, a payment, or a useful tool. It can also show support, time, space, or improved health. Therefore, I suggest practical steps, simple budgets, and steady work. I also watch for odd impressions, because intuition sometimes delivers accurate surprises.

Ace of Pentacles: Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the Ace of Pentacles often signals delays, shaky terms, or wasted resources. They need a fresh start in the social, family and money area. Therefore, I look for poor timing, fear posing as caution, or leaky budgets. I then advise tightening boundaries and resetting priorities. Sometimes the right move is to wait for terms that truly respect your value. This reverse type’s meaning is an opposite, not the mirror or amplified reversals as described in the first P.E.N.S.I. lesson.

Sympathetic Decks

When the Rider–Waite deck appeared, it often reflected affluent contexts. Therefore, the Ace of Pentacles might have implied larger sums or property.

In my professional work, I use Ellen Dugan’s Witches’ Tarot, and I love its everyday clarity from a witch’s perspective. There, this card often points to regular but meaningful gains. Always connect the P.E.N.S.I. layers and your client’s reality, because context shapes results.

For upright spell work, I keep the method simple and grounded. Place the Ace of Pentacles beneath a dish of salt and a coin. Then dress a green candle with olive oil, and speak your intention for income, health, or a stable purchase. I like placing spell candles on mirrors to amplify energy. Please never leave candles unattended. You can snuff and relight as needed.

Tarot Spell: Ace of Pentacles Reversed

For reversed work, place the card upside down beneath a bowl of rice with a bay leaf. Then clearly name what you will stop wasting and where you will redirect energy. Snuff a brown candle while stating your reset for tomorrow. Therefore, this version helps you reduce loss, set limits, and shift direction with purpose. Finish the candle the following day with thoughts of saving and being responsible with money.

The number eight is tied to rhythm, balance, and cycles. In the Eight of Pentacles, it represents the repetition required to move toward mastery. Eight teaches that growth is not random but cumulative, gained by returning to the task again and again until it becomes part of you.

Fourth Layer of Context: Symbolism

Traditional imagery depicts a craftsman seated at his bench, hammering pentacles one by one. The repetition of the coins highlights the lesson of discipline: progress is not about a single perfect act, but about the willingness to keep shaping and refining. No matter how you slice it, it has the flavor of a project nearing a successful completion.

Finally, the symbolism and imagery appear to be quite uniform across the majority of tarot decks. In my Witches Tarot, the image is that of a witch working long into the night making every stitch count.

Tarot Spells: Eight of Pentacles

Because this is a Spell of Patient Mastery, begin by setting up your workspace with eight coins or small tokens placed in a line. Then, light a candle at one end to symbolize the spark of discipline and intention. Next, with each coin, state one small action or step you will repeat daily to move closer to your goal.

Finally, as you finish, slide the coins together into a pile to show that small steps ultimately accumulate into larger results. Carry one coin as a charm until the goal is met.

Spell of Grounded Progress: Write your desired skill or achievement on a slip of paper. Place it beneath a grounding stone such as hematite, obsidian, or smoky quartz on your worktable. Each time you sit down to practice, touch the stone and speak aloud, “Each step carries me further.”

When the goal is complete, bury the paper under a tree or in the earth to seal your growth and honor the effort invested.

Conclusion

When I teach tarot, I use my  P.E.N.S.I. method. That stands for Position, Element, Numerology, Symbolism, and Intuition. Each layer adds context. We are not working with a spread here, so Position is only touched lightly. The other layers bring out the deeper meaning of the card.

Five of Pentacles, 1st Layer: Position

In a spread, this card often lands where a questioner feels hardship. Even alone, the card points to a time when resources run thin. You may feel cut off from help, even when support exists nearby. The Five of Pentacles shows where someone feels most exposed and most in need.

2nd Layer: Element

Pentacles are tied to Earth. Earth is steady, but here it feels cold and scarce. The element points to money, shelter, health, and material concerns. Earth reminds us that spirit and body are linked. If one suffers, the other feels it too. This card highlights where Earth feels like a burden.

3rd Layer of Context for Five of Pentacles: Numerology

Five represents change and challenge. It breaks the balance of Four, often in rough ways. With Pentacles, the number five can mean job loss, debt, or health struggles. It is movement that feels hard, not easy. Yet five also holds the seed of growth, because change forces new choices.

Remember the first P.E.N.S.I. lesson? With Five, think “sorrow, loss, regret”.

4th Layer: Symbolism

The classic imagery shows two figures outside in the cold, passing stained glass windows. This symbolizes exclusion, lack, or feeling abandoned. The window glows, reminding us that help is near, though not always seen. Bandages on the figures show pain, yet they still move forward. The snow underscores hardship, but also purity and lessons learned.

It’s interesting to me the figures are outside a church, they are not begging, but nor is anyone inviting them in. To me, this speaks to being ostracized, pushed out because of financial difficulty and hardship and sometimes by folk of similar faith. Everyone is a friend until you don’t have money.

But also, there are two figures in this image. You could read this as (and I often do) as one person alone, struggling and pushed out, and new friendship is struck. Almost as if the new figure comes along and says “you too?” Someone else in a similar situation comes along and new relationships are borne.

I would also have you consider the four of pentacles too. Were they not hanging on so tightly over fear of loss? Does that not suggest that to hang onto money, we can push others away? Stop socializing? So, when things go south with money, it seems natural that our usual circles withdraw from us, having withdrawn from them.

5th Layer: Intuition

When I read the Five of Pentacles, I sense it asks us to face loss without shame. Everyone goes through periods of lack. The card warns against pride that keeps us from seeking help. It also suggests that support is closer than we think, and our anxiety is greater than warranted. Intuition often brings the question: “Where am I refusing aid?”

In a spread, (position) can tell you a lot, we haven’t got to spreads yet, but we will.

Five of Pentacles: Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the Five of Pentacles can point to recovery. It signals help arriving, resources returning, or finding hope after despair. It may also warn of ignoring lessons learned, slipping back into unhealthy patterns. Still, reversed is often softer, showing that the cold is beginning to lift. I find the anxiety is still overblown, disproportionate.

Sympathetic Decks

The Rider–Waite deck  symbolism is similar with some older decks, however it can vary greatly compared to many modern decks.

With regard to the Rider-Waite symbolism, my Witches’ Tarot, shows a barren tree in the middle of a bleak winter landscape. The tiny flower in the corner of the image reminds us that things green again. The anxiety is disproportionate.

As with the Rider-Waite, the individual may feel isolated or shut out, and sometimes by people of similar faith. I advise people to not lose faith in themselves. Tighten the budget, let go of what you can.

In  P.E.N.S.I. if you read the first lesson, we know that coins/pentacles are always “social, family, money … always money”. So, this card agrees with the Rider-Waite, it looks like bleak times with social, family and money. But “spring” comes again.

This card is not a verdict. It is a weather report. Cold now, warmer soon. The lesson is to look up, knock, and accept. I remind myself that asking for help is a skill. It grows with use. The Five of Pentacles invites that practice and promises a lighted door.

In my teaching I use P.E.N.S.I., a layered method that keeps you from memorizing long lists of meanings. Position, Element, Numerology, Symbolism, and Intuition all add depth. Position is always our first layer, but since we are not yet in spreads, we only touch on it lightly here. You will find that when these layers connect, your readings become natural and fluid.

Four of Pentacles, 1st Layer of Context: Position

Position is the first layer of context in any tarot spread. Even though we are not placing this card in spreads yet, remember that its meaning can change dramatically depending on where it lands. In single card lessons, we simply note that position frames the entire reading and will become more important later.

2nd Layer: Element is Earth

The suit of Pentacles belongs to Earth. Earth rules social ties, family life, health, and resources, with money as the thread running through them all. When the Four of Pentacles appears, I watch for themes of stability, savings, or guardedness in these areas. Think about where you or your client may be holding tight in life, whether with money, possessions, or even emotions.

3rd Layer: Four of Pentacles: Numerology Two

Four creates structure, foundation, and consolidation. Combined with Earth, this signals security that can become rigid. In practical terms, it shows budgeting, saving, or keeping resources close. Sometimes this is wise discipline, and sometimes it becomes a fear of loss that blocks growth.

4th Layer for the Four of Pentacles: Symbolism

The crown coin shows thoughts dominated by money. The chest coin shows emotional attachment to security. The coins beneath the feet show grounding, but also immobility. The stone seat reinforces a sense of permanence, while the walled city suggests both safety and isolation. Taken together, the symbolism highlights the difference between stability and stagnation.

Now, that’s along the lines of the Rider-Waite book.

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

Intuition blends all the layers. Often I sense the Four of Pentacles when someone is saving, protecting what is theirs, or setting strong boundaries. Other times, intuition reveals clinging too tightly out of fear. I pause, look at the card, and notice any impressions about generosity, guardedness, or balance. This is where the card speaks most personally.

Four of Pentacles: Reversed Meaning

Reversed, this card often signals greed, fear of loss, or wasted resources. It can also show the positive side of letting go, becoming generous, or loosening restrictions. Sometimes the reversed Four of Pentacles points to shaky finances, overspending, or instability. Other times it signals that freedom and relief are possible when we release the grip and trust flow.

I always see and teach “Four” is like divine discontent  in a way, four is foundation, but more to come, more to build, more choices and potential headaches. Avoid the headaches or at least the severity. It’s a four, either way; upright or reversed.

This reverse type’s meaning is an “amplified”, not the mirror or opposite reversals as described in the first P.E.N.S.I. lesson. A reversed card’s position in a spread with other cards must be taken into consideration, the same as an upright card. We’ll get to that in future lessons.

Sympathetic Decks

In Rider–Waite deck contexts, the Four of Pentacles often reflected concerns about wealth and property. In more modern decks, the image may soften into lessons about balance, generosity, or security in relationships. My current favorite, the Witches’ Tarot, and has the same symbolism, just stylized different. Many decks have the same symbols, but reflect the nuances, world, perceptions of their creators, just stylized different.

What I see, personally with this symbolism (some tarot guidebooks touch on some of these) is the common Rider-Waite aligned meanings but more. My favorite current deck is  Ellen Dugan’s Witches’ Tarot,

The pentacle above his head, tells me the person is preoccupied with social/family/money things and always money per earlier lessons. Look how the figure clutches the one in front of him with both hands, hanging on so tight. I think that seems like insecurity and anxiousness over it, protective of it but perhaps in an unhealthy way.

I see the figure also stepping on, pinning down two pentacles with their feet, and two is polarization. It’s also about choices, perhaps difficult ones. I add all that up and it also seems about control, and to the point where it may be controlling them.

Doesn’t seem like a particularly happy or peaceful state about social, family and money. I detect all kinds of things with clients too. My advice though is usually the same; health boundaries include financial ones too. And/or, take the time, look down the road and include yourself in your math, your wellbeing. And, if in a spread, the position and context of the other cards tell me even more.

This card highlights everyday budgeting and practical boundaries. Always connect the layers of P.E.N.S.I. to the reality at hand.

Nine signifies culmination, wisdom, and readiness to refine. It marks fulfillment earned through consistent practice. Because nine completes a cycle, it encourages reflection before beginning again. Also, it promotes discernment about what truly sustains you. Therefore, it frames abundance as stewardship rather than accumulation.

4th layer: Symbolism

A solitary figure walks a cultivated garden with calm assurance. Grapes show ripeness, pleasure, and careful tending. Because a falcon rests on the glove, discipline tames instinct and sharpens focus. Garden walls indicate boundaries that guard serenity. Therefore, the scene blends luxury with restraint and mastery.

This image just screams “look at my garden”, a healthy pride, satisfaction etc., enjoying abundance. Success, self-confidence combine with things like herbal and garden magic, but also pecuniary (monetary) workings and success.

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

This card feels quietly proud, settled, and awake to beauty. It carries gratitude that softens effort into ease. Because alignment meets results here, guilt dissolves around enjoyment.

Also, breath slows as awareness notes every graceful detail. Therefore, intuition affirms that peace is the point, not a prize.

Nine of Pentacles: Reversed Meaning

Reversed, independence becomes isolation or performative luxury. It can show overwork that never allows rest.

Because fear of loss drives choices, joy feels scarce. Therefore, rebuild worth from presence, not perfection, and share selectively.

Seven of Pentacles, 1st Layer of Context: Position

We’re not in a spread, though I will present many spreads for you down the road. Take the card out and look at it while you are reading the lesson. The greyscale images in your books are far less helpful in making conscious and subconscious associations. Remember from the original P.E.N.S.I lesson that 7 is like the start of a new path.

2nd Layer: Element is Earth

Earth highlights grounded patience, cycles of cultivation, and the truth that lasting results unfold gradually through consistent tending. Remember the element of earth from P.E.N.S.I; social, family, money … always money.

3rd Layer for Seven of Pentacles: Numerology of 7

In P.E.N.S.I. seven is like the start of a new path. Here in this card combined with the symbolism below asks the questions “how much longer,” and “how did I do/have done so far.” Seven symbolizes introspection, testing, and analysis. In the suit of Pentacles, it underscores the need to review your investments of time and effort before pushing forward.

4th layer: Symbolism

A figure leans on a tool, watching pentacles ripen on a vine. His posture suggests both weariness and thoughtful review. The vine reflects natural growth cycles, and the pause signals delayed gratification, patience, and honest self-assessment. Overall this card speaks to the anticipated reward for all our hard work and efforts.

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

This card feels like standing before your own garden and asking whether what you’ve nurtured is still what you wish to harvest. It blends pride in progress with the courage to admit when it’s time for change. Also, it clearly speaks eventual reward for all your hard work and efforts. The work is not done, keep working smart, not just hard.

Seven of Pentacles: Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the card warns of wasted energy, impatience, or disappointing results. It points to the danger of clinging to work that no longer yields value and encourages redirecting your resources toward more fertile ground.

Sympathetic Decks

Decks with agricultural or seasonal imagery resonate most, reinforcing the themes of planting, growth, tending, and harvest cycles. Though the Rider Waite in it’s era probably involved more expensive and rewarding endeavors, it’s still all about social, family, money. Building something, anticipating rewards for all the hard work and effort.

My Greek Deck and my Witches Tarot both have similar images to the Rider Waite of a farmer at work, taking a pause. So, in most decks the imagery will be quite similar.

Write down one task or effort that drains you. Tear the paper into pieces while saying, “I release what no longer grows.” Place under the Seven of Pentacles reversed for day and a night. Burn or bury the scraps to seal the release and reclaim your energy.

I use my P.E.N.S.I. method when I teach Tarot. That stands for Position, Element, Numerology, Symbolism, and Intuition. Each layer helps us understand a card more deeply. Because we are working through single cards here, Position is only touched on lightly as context.

Six of Pentacles, 1st Layer: Position

The Six of Pentacles often lands in readings where balance of power or resources is at play. It can suggest the role of the giver or the receiver, depending on the situation.

2nd Layer: Element

Pentacles belong to the element of Earth. This connects the Six of Pentacles to material resources, the physical body, money, work, and tangible security.

3rd Layer of Context for Six of Pentacles: Numerology

Six is the number of harmony, balance, and exchange. It shows up when relationships need equal footing or when energy must be shared. In Pentacles, the six emphasizes fairness, generosity, and learning how to handle resources responsibly. In this case, applied to giving or receiving assistance.

4th Layer: Symbolism

The traditional imagery in Rider-Waite decks often shows a wealthy figure giving coins to those in need while holding scales. This points toward generosity, but also judgment and inequality. Who holds the scales controls the balance. The card’s symbolism invites us to reflect on charity, fairness, and how power is distributed.

I often find this to be giving with strings attached or expectations. Okay, it is reasonable sometimes to give with strings attached or expectations, but I advise people to be clear about it. No matter which end of it your find yourself, the giver or the recipient, honesty, being forthcoming will prevent a lot of negativity down the road.

5th Layer: Intuition

Intuitively, this card may feel like a reminder that cycles turn. One day you give, another day you receive. It encourages gratitude for both roles. The Six of Pentacles asks you to check where you stand now and whether you hold the scales fairly.

Six of Pentacles: Reversed Meaning

When reversed, the Six of Pentacles may signal imbalance. It can mean strings attached to generosity, exploitation, or debt. It may also warn that we are not being honest about which role we are in; giver, taker, or both.

I find this reverse to be the mirror type. Not the opposite, the same but different. Instead of strings attached and expectations, it’s taking advantage of another or being taken advantage of.

Sympathetic Decks

The Tarot de Marseille emphasizes the scales as a symbol of fairness, making it strong for upright readings. The Rider–Waite–Smith deck highlights the act of giving to the poor, sharpening themes of charity and imbalance. In the Thoth deck, Crowley named this card “Success,” which draws attention to harmony in material flow. These variations deepen understanding depending on which deck you use.

Reversed Spell: Place the Six of Pentacles reversed under a black candle. Surround it with scraps of paper where you have written debts, obligations, or exploitative ties. As the candle burns, visualize those imbalances dissolving. Dispose of the ashes to symbolically cut unfair cords.

This reading uses the P.E.N.S.I. method: Position, Element, Numerology, Symbolism, and Intuition to build a complete picture of the Ten of Pentacles. Each layer shows how spiritual and practical wealth connect. My method is about building association vs relying on endless memorizing.

Ten of Pentacles, 1st Layer: Position

In a spread, the Ten of Pentacles often signals long-term security and fulfillment. When goals begin to manifest, this card usually appears as family or community also become part of that success. Therefore, it suggests your efforts have taken root and your energy now supports others. Although the position of this card in a spread can change its context, we’re currently not covering spreads or positions in this course. However, we’ll get to that eventually.

2nd Layer: Element

The Ten of Pentacles belongs to Earth, the element of form, foundation, and value. Earth reminds us that wealth is more than coins or contracts. True abundance includes trust, time, and belonging. When grounded in gratitude, Earth energy turns success into service. Remember the original lesson in P.E.N.S.I about the element of earth? Think social, family, money …. and always money.

3rd Layer of Context for Ten of Pentacles: Numerology

The number ten closes one cycle and opens another. It represents culmination and renewal at once. The Ten of Pentacles reflects mastery of material life and invites us to use that mastery wisely. Each ending carries the seed of the next creation. Remember in the P.E.N.S.I. method, with a 10, we’re about to collapse back into a one again. 10: 1+0 =1.

4th Layer: Symbolism

In most decks, a family typically gathers in a courtyard surrounded by pentacles, often near an archway or home. Meanwhile, dogs rest peacefully, showing loyalty and comfort. Additionally, the elder figure represents wisdom earned. Then, the archway marks a passage from effort to legacy, from ambition to contentment. Finally, many deck images show generations—children, parents, and elders—all sharing space and stability.

Altogether, the card says everyone is doing alright—a happy, content family or coven. Furthermore, it reflects commitment, community, and financial success. At the same time, the image holds energies of loyalty and thankfulness. Ultimately, it can even imply legacy, including magical legacy.

5th Layer: Intuition

The Ten of Pentacles feels calm, complete, and deeply secure. It speaks to the peace of knowing you’ve built something lasting. Intuitively, it reminds us that wealth is shared energy. What we nurture with love strengthens everyone connected to it. Look at all the other cards in the spread, the positions, “see the movie.” It will come to you.

Ten of Pentacles: Reversed Meaning

When reversed, this card warns of clinging to control, greed, or family expectations. It may show fear of loss or imbalance between giving and keeping. Reconnection with gratitude and simplicity restores its flow. If on the one hand, upright, we’re looking at a family that’s secure financially, the reverse is often squabbling over money, perhaps even over inheritance.

Think unsolicited or unwelcome advice and interference in your personal from others too. A smothering and controlling group of people.

Sympathetic Decks

This card aligns with decks rooted in ancestral themes, home-centered art, or earthy tones. The Everyday Witch Tarot and Witches’ Tarot by Ellen Dugan echo its grounded energy beautifully, even though the imagery is a bit different. But in the era Rider Waite was created, we’d be talking about “old money” most likely, families that come from money. Today’s decks would be more “round fitting” than that.

I always remind students of my P.E.N.S.I. philosophy. My system centers on association over memorization, layering position, element, numerology, symbolism, and intuition. You do not need 78 flashcards. You need living connections, so readings flow naturally instead of feeling like a trivia quiz.

Three of Pentacles, 1st Layer of Context: Position

The Three arrives early in the suit’s journey, beyond the spark of the Ace and the weighing of the Two. It signals early traction, not the finish line. In spreads, it points to projects that benefit from planning, mentorship, and structured cooperation. We measure progress, document processes, and build habits that make success repeatable.

Take the card out and look at it while you are reading the lesson. The greyscale images in your books are far less helpful in making conscious and subconscious associations.

2nd Layer: Element is Earth

Earth/coins/pentacles, think social, family, money … and always money. The Earth suit brings structure, material outcomes, and embodied practice. In this card, Earth shows as teamwork, apprenticeship, and quality craft. We ground vision in skilled labor. The cathedral setting underscores that lasting results require time, resources, and coordinated effort.

3rd Layer for Three of Pentacles: Numerology of 3

Three sows that something has formed. We move from options to a real shape, whether a forming team or a concrete project. Threes activate growth, expression, and collaboration. Here, the number frames roles, standards, and shared timelines. Therefore, pay attention to the details. Small misalignments compound, while small improvements scale beautifully.

4th layer: Symbolism

The bench shows elevation through skill. The arches suggest spiritual reach. The plans show order and scope. The trio illustrates feedback loops that improve quality. The message is simple. Combine vision, labor, and guidance. Without alignment, the mortar crumbles. With alignment, craft becomes legacy and recognition follows earned excellence.

My Witch’s Tarot by Ellen Dugan shows a young person at a desk as if studying, He’s sitting there looking at something and drawing/writing in a journal. It suggests study, paying attention to the details. Also, this has a sense of trying to understand or master something. It would imply somewhere “in the picture” is a mentor or teacher, collaboration, discussion, questions and answers.

Notice the arched window? Spiritual reach, perhaps philosophy and spiritual knowledge is what’s being gained along with what one studies. There’s got to be a graduation of some kind, and some kind of recognition once the study and project are completed.

I tend to get the same general meanings of the Rider-Waite version, perhaps a little different, symbolism more befitting age and culture. It just resonates better with who I am,.

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

When I draw this card, I hear, “Ask for input.” I check lists, update processes, and invite critique. I also remember to document the win. Intuition nudges me to keep a clean workspace, track iterations, and share standards. It is not glamorous, but it is magic, because consistency turns effort into mastery.

Three of Pentacles: Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the gears grind. Miscommunication, uneven effort, or corner cutting stalls the build. Roles blur and standards slip. Meetings replace progress and the plan collects dust. The fix is practical. Clarify deliverables, set checkpoints, and restore quality control. If the team cannot align, scale back the scope and reset expectations.

For me, this type of reverse is the “mirror”, not “amplified” or “opposite”. These are three types I talk about in P.E.N.S.I.

Sympathetic Decks

Rider–Waite anchors the theme with a literal build site. Ellen Dugan’s Witches’ Tarot holds the same current of teamwork and recognition. Both decks emphasize process, mentorship, and the pride of good work. Imagery may shift, yet the story stays the same. We craft something worth showing, together. I have other decks too, but one thing I see in common is “paying attention to the details”, or reversed it is like the person has no patience for the details.

For shared success, inscribe three names or sigils on a green or brown candle. Place it on your workspace with a written project scope and deadline. Light it as you visualize synchronized effort and timely milestones. Never leave a lit candle unattended. Snuff it out and relight later if needed.

To dissolve friction, write the conflict on paper and fold it small. Set a black candle over it with the intent to clear blocks. Light the candle and visualize clean handoffs. Afterward, burn the paper safely outside and replace it with a revised, simpler plan.

P.E.N.S.I. relies very little on memorizing and heavily on association. It’s much easy and more effective in actual reading vs trying to remember the keywords for 78 cards. Two of Pentacles, 1st Layer of Context: Position

A card’s position in a tarot spread creates the first layer of context. However, we are not working with spreads yet. We will cover spreads later in this series, and then we will apply position like pros. For now, simply remember that position matters, and we will return to it when the time is right.

2nd Layer: Element is Earth

This card belongs to Pentacles, so the second layer of context is Earth. Think social, family money …. and always money. All things that are earthbound. Earth rules money, work, health, and tangible outcomes. It also touches family systems and social obligations. Money is always tied to such things one way or another. Therefore, when the Two of Pentacles appears, expect a real-world balancing act. You are still in the material lane.

Hold the card in front of you and say it; social, family, money … always money.

3rd Layer: Two of Pentacles, Numerology 2

Twos in tarot represent duality, partnership, and decisions. Whereas one is a starting point or beginning, two is a connection, sometimes like polarizing on another person or thing. It’s also associated with choice. With Pentacles, the “two” becomes a question of balance: money vs. health, work vs. rest, or short-term vs. long-term stability.

Holding the card in front of you, say it: Two is choice, polarization, balancing. 

4th Layer for The Two of Pentacles, Symbology

I personally find the symbolism on the two of pentacles just screams meaning. A figure dances while juggling two pentacles, tied together with an infinity symbol, so juggling social, family, money … always money. Does juggling come naturally? How long can one juggle like that? The fact that these coins or pentacles are tracing an infinity symbol, (the lemniscate) screams hamster wheel to me. If the juggler takes their eyes off or lets their focus drop for even a moment, they lose it.

This person is doing it, but so focused on juggling they pay little attention or have time for the ships coming and going. Look at the water, requires some thoughtful navigation? You bet. It is a matter of time before something gets dropped, forgotten or crashes. The juggler should try and reduce the juggling, what can he or she juggle less? Can something be delegated?

This person is multitasking like a pro, but one can’t keep that up forever. They need to manage what they are juggling with greater intent and more effectively, and perhaps let some things go, put them on auto-pilot or delegate. Perhaps someone can help manage the ships coming and going so they don’t crash. Simplify. The waves remind us that external forces always test our rhythm.

Fifth Layer of Context: Intuition

Intuition binds the layers into a single message. I pause, breathe, and listen. Often, I see this card pointing at cash-flow timing and issues, shifting hours, or competing projects. Struggling to make ends meet every month. I advice them to go over the budget, trim it down a little, and what can you delegate safely?

Biting off more than you can chew over time. Therefore, I suggest calendars, auto-payments to avoid late fees and other small safeguards. I also note odd flashes, because intuition can reveal the one ball you cannot afford to drop.

I often know the Two of Pentacles has sparked creativity “how do I get off this hamster wheel?”, second job, night school, on the job training – to get ahead with money. But it sounds like adding more, doesn’t it. It can be done, but get some help doing it.

Altogether now, this card shows up when you’re juggling social, family and money too much but making it work,  for now. You’re in danger of dropping the ball. Upright, the Two of Pentacles encourages flexibility, resourcefulness, and creativity with limited resources.

You can balance competing priorities, but you’ll need rhythm, planning, and maybe a sense of humor.

Have the card out ... stare at that symbolism and ponder the intuition insights and upright meaning, ponder the meaning of “two”, connect it all with social, family and money. Speak your findings out loud.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, this card calls out chaos, missed bills, dropped responsibilities, or straight-up overwhelm. It suggests you’ve lost balance or ignored the practical side of things. Financial disarray, poor time management, or overcommitment are possible. The juggler has dropped the ball. I would check for bank overdrafts immediately, if not, deposit some money and maybe cancels a payment or subscription to avoid those run-away fees.

This reverse is not “the opposite”, (there are three types in P.E.N.S.I.). This is “The Mirror” – the same but certain things are different.

Rider-Waite vs Some Modern Decks (Sympathetic)

Created in the 1,900’s, the Rider-Waite deck was for the affluent, I don’t think the cards would have spoke to overdrafts back then. This would have been bigger money shortages and larger projects gone awry in the reverse. You knew or would “bank” on your name and go see a banker or a wealthy friend. Their problems seen in the card would have been more like the funding or progress of a hospital, educational institution or industrial site being held up.

That doesn’t mean some of your clients won’t be affluent to various levels, but remember to gear this for the average person. This could be the average single mom trying to make ends meet and her projects could simply be at home-courses to get into nursing or trying to spin a hobby into a side-hustle.

Tarot Spell: Two of Pentacles

For upright spell work, I keep the method simple and practical. Place the Two of Pentacles beneath a small dish of coins and a written schedule or all the things you have to do. Dress a brown candle with olive oil. Speak your intention for balance, timely payments, and smooth flow between tasks. Light, breathe, and visualize a steady rhythm. Never leave candles unattended. Snuff and relight as needed.

Make to enchant each ingredient/component individually, don’t just lob it all together. For deeper technique, see my article on how to enchant. This spell is likely best during late waxing to full moon phase.

Tarot Spell: Two of Pentacles Reversed

For reversed work, place the card upside down beneath a bowl of rice with a thyme sprig. Name what you will drop, delegate, or delay. Snuff a black or brown candle while stating your reset for tomorrow. Therefore, this version helps you reduce chaos, firm boundaries, and restore a sane pace. Finish the candle the following day. Let the flame serve as a reminder of your boundaries and choices. This spell is best performed on a waning gibbous or waning moon phase.

Don’t forget to check for lunar void of course phases so you don’t waste your time and energy!

The Two of Pentacles brings a living balance, not a static one. Position belongs first, yet we will add it later. Earth frames the domain. Two marks exchange, choice, polarization. Symbols add story. Intuition personalizes the message. Therefore, each layer builds on the last and produces a reading you can trust.
