In Hermeticism, the Principle of Correspondence means everything in the universe reflects everything else. What is true in the vast cosmos is also true inside you. It might sound complex, but it’s practical. If you understand the patterns in the universe, you’ll understand the patterns inside yourself. Align your inner world with the greater truths of the universe, and you’ll gain control over your magic, your life, and your spiritual growth.

The connection is clearer when you realize that “As Above, So Below” doesn’t just apply to the external world, but also to your soul. As within, so without. Your inner thoughts and emotions directly reflect the outer world. When you bring balance and harmony to your soul, your external life mirrors that. The symbolism of Baphomet is reconciling paradox and being at peace but also As Above, So Below. Paradox is reconciled in the Universe, and must be within ourselves too.

For instance, in witchcraft, when a witch casts a spell, they are aligning the “above” (the greater universe) with the “below” (their inner world). Why I Call Corners

Because I like my magic to work, I always call corners. Circles are not always required, but they matter. Beginners especially need circles. Calling corners creates an enclosed environment, sealed from everything unhelpful. Consequently, only what we allow enters, and only what we send out passes through.

Think of the circle like a sacred bubble. Therefore, everyday noise stays outside, and the work stays nice and clean.

Calling corners and casting circle are performed differently in various traditions and cultures. While this may seem like a lot, it’s actually pretty simple: cleansing/clearing the space, striking the divine light, calling the corners, invoking deity and casting circle. This article is a bit lengthy, but only due to my explaining things as detailed as I can.

Calling Corners and the Nature of the Sphere

When I cast, I never imagine a flat ring. Instead, I create a full sphere that grows around me. Because of that, the space feels whole. It exists outside normal time and space, sealed from distraction.

I make it just large enough to fit the work. Sometimes it fills the room. Consequently, I never waste energy building something larger than needed.

Calling the Corners for Beginners

Because new witches crave structure, I always recommend calling the corners. It gives practice, grounding, and discipline. Consequently, you learn how to hold space before attempting riskier workings.

You may one day choose to work without a circle. However, calling the corners first will teach you control. It prevents distractions, protects your focus, and reinforces that the sacred space belongs only to you.

Preparing the Space

Some of my besoms.

Before I cast, I prepare. Because chaos never helps, I gather every tool I need. I cleanse with sage, a besom, or sound. I strike Divine Light, then form the Instant Alpha Trigger. With hands sweeping down, I anchor into ritual awareness.

Striking Divine Light

Wooden match in hand, in a state of alpha, I light the match and speak as I light the altar candle “I strike this candle with Divine Light, light of Dryghten, the Dark Light from which all came forth.” That flame is later carried to all other candles in the working area, clockwise.

Striking the Divine Light; I am referencing Dryghten. Dryghten (also spelled Dryghtyn) is an Old English word meaning “Lord,” and in some Wiccan traditions it names the supreme, universal deity. Rather than being a personal figure, Dryghten is often viewed as an impersonal, pantheistic, or monistic presence—the source from which the God, the Goddess, and all other deities emerge.

Over time, practitioners and writers have connected this concept with other names for the ultimate divine. Scott Cunningham, drawing on Neoplatonism, spoke of it as “The One,” while others refer to it simply as “The All,” an all-encompassing, impersonal divinity. In certain pagan contexts, the Sanskrit word “Akasha,” meaning “aether,” is used to describe the same omnipresent spiritual energy that threads through existence.

Feminist Wiccans, including Starhawk, have evoked the image of the “Star Goddess” as the universal creator, and the phrase “Ancient Providence” occasionally appears in blessings as another way of invoking Dryghten. I am not wiccan, just a plain old witch.

From there, I connect with each element.

Elemental Connection Before Calling Corners

As I stand before the altar, now in a state of alpha, I first feel my roots, see them running deeper and deeper into the earth.

I say, “I am connected to the earth.” Roots spiral downward, and I send some energy back upward to air.

I say, “I am connected to the air.” Branches spiral upward, and I send some energy downward to earth.

I say, “I am connected to the fire.” Flames spiral clockwise, and I send some of that energy outward toward water.

I say, “I am connected to the water.” Waves spiral inward, and I send some energy outward toward fire. I feel all these energies spinning and spiraling through me.

Finally, I affirm, “I am connected to all things,” (I visualize and fathom the universe, The All and this earth and everything in and on it. “I am life,” (I see my own energy pulsing). “I am power,” (I will it and see my aura change, normally it is a green and gold fire) … Next, I am magic (with an astral hand, without moving my physical body, I inscribe a clockwise pentacle in the air.

What the Corners Really Are

When I say calling corners, I mean I am calling elemental energies, not elementals. In this instance, the corners represent the forces of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water moving into balance.

The corners are sometimes called guardians or watchtowers. They can also be worked with as spirits, angels, dragons, demons, faery folk, or whatever powers align with your path.

I stay with the raw elemental energies unless the working calls for specific guardians.

Call upon and summon what you will, but I advise you do your homework first.

You may also want to build relationship aforehand too. Take the time to learn about those dragons, angels or elementals.

Show respect in all aspects of summoning.

Do your research, consider corresponding offerings for the four guardians you intend on calling upon.

Paracelsus’ Elementals

Paracelsus’ elementals.

In some traditions, Paracelsus’ elementals are called upon. In the lore of alchemy and hidden wisdom, the 16th century Swiss alchemist Paracelsus spoke of spirits born from the raw fabric of creation, beings he called elementals. Each was bound to one of the four great forces that shape existence.

Beneath the earth move the Gnomes, guardians of stone and seed, said to hide both treasures and secrets in the dark places below. Flowing with rivers and tides are the Undines, water-spirits who embody love, intuition, and the mysteries of the deep. High upon the winds dance the Sylphs, airy beings of breath and inspiration, stirring dreams and guiding the currents of sky. And within every flame burns the Salamander, fierce and radiant, carrying the power of transformation and will.

Paracelsus taught that these beings belong wholly to their elements: a Gnome cannot live in fire, an Undine cannot take to the air. Yet together they form the living weave of earth, water, air, and fire—the eternal companions of those who seek to understand and work with the elements.

For some, this is a great way to visualize and focus on the elements.

Altar Correspondences for Elements

My altar fully loaded.

Outside the basic elemental forces, I consider correspondences. The right correspondences strengthen the working and ground the intention. On my altar, starting at North and moving clockwise,

I set salt for Earth, a cauldron for Fire, a bell for Air, and a chalice for Water. Some will use additional color-corresponding candles in the quarters/corners, or images of Paracelsus’ elementals, perhaps corresponding images or figures of angels, dragons etc.

Of course, let’s not split hairs. A cauldron or a chalice can represent any or all of the elements. A candle to most is fire, but others will want to have it represent all four elements.

I burn things in my cauldron, so for me it embodies Fire. A chalice might hold salt water, wine, or even a crystal, so it flexes too.

The point is intention, not rigid props. Go to bargain hunt and argue about a sticker price if you are argumentative, I’m not having it.

Traditional Order and Variations

Traditionally, many witching cultures and paths call the elements in the order of Earth in the North, Air in the East, Fire in the South, and Water in the West. East connects with Air because of breath and morning breezes. South connects with Fire because of heat and passion.

However, some of us associate East with Fire, the rising sun, manifestation, and enlightenment. Because of this, I sometimes alter the order to match how energy feels to me in practice. Authentic witchcraft adapts to both tradition and personal connection.

Calling Corners Step by Step

There are many methods, again partly depending on what your are calling for, angels, dragons, spirits, elemental energies or elementals. I recommend basic elemental energy for beginners. But there are also many ways of calling/opening portals, target areas where you wish the energies to come.

First, I always have mapped out different circumferences. I measure, I walk it, I make note of “landmarks” in the four directions.

The simplest is using your receptive hand while focused in a direction of that energy, standing in the center of what will be your circle/sphere. Call those energies to gather where you will them too. Another method, much more complex, using the athame, drawing counter clockwise pentacles to open portals, and clockwise pentacles to close them.

I typically use an open hand, my receptive one, and sometimes hold my pentacle altar tile while summoning. For very serious magic workings, it’s the athame and pentacles. It may also depend on tradition, magical culture and personal path.

Start with the North. I face North, extend my receptive hand, and speak.
“Guardians of the North, Powers of Earth, Foundation. We respectfully summon you, and bid you joyous welcome. Come, join us Old Friend. Welcome Earth.”

I visualize green and brown energy forming in the North like a ball of energy.

Calling the Corners of East, South, and West

I turn East, visualizing the North energy fixed in place. When done properly, I actually do see that ball of earth energy fixed in place, even when I turn with my eyes closed.“Guardians of the East, Powers of Air, Faculty. We respectfully summon you, and bid you joyous welcome. Come, join us Old Friend. Welcome Air.”

I turn South, visualizing both Earth and Air. “Guardians of the South, Powers of Fire, Creation and Destruction. We respectfully summon you, and bid you joyous welcome. Come, join us. Welcome Fire.”

I turn West, visualizing Earth, Air, and Fire. “Guardians of the West, Powers of Water, Mystery and Depth. We respectfully summon you, and bid you joyous welcome. Come, join us. Welcome Water.”

Now all four elemental guardians stand in place. I always pause and feel for each energy as I call them, once I sense them, then I add “welcome, earth” etc. It really is weird but wonderful, when I turn and call these corners with my eyes closed and see these balls of energy.

Invoking Hecate

Because calling corners sets the stage, I then invoke deity. I light the candle, burn herbs, and pour libations. You do not have to or necessarily need to invoke deities when calling the corners and casting circle. And the deities you choose to invoke require their own accolades, placations, offerings and correspondences. These are simply who I honor and am honored by.

For Hecate, I speak: “Mother Night, Goddess Bright, Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell, Mother of the Craft, Protector of Witches, Queen of Ghosts, Keeper of Hell’s Keys, Bringer of Storms. Mighty Hecate, I honor you.”

Offerings for Hecate: dandelion, garlic, myrrh, mugwort (black sage), and wine.

Invoking the Horned God

Now in the picture on the left is one of oldest symbols for male.

I then invoke the Horned God: “Father Dark, God my Spark, Lord of the Land, Who corrects my aim and teaches me to Hunt, Master of the Wilds, Guardian of Strength, Bringer of Balance, Lord of Light and Dark who prepares my hands for war but my heart for peace. Great Horned God, I honor you.”

Offerings for the Horned God: white oak, frankincense, cedar, barley or bread, and ale.

These are but very simple ways to honor and invoke these deities. Trust me, there are much greater rituals than this, but this is a good place to start.

I also keep corresponding statues of gods and goddesses on my altar. If you feel called to work with a deity, look through our occult books, Greek, Egyptian, Celtic, Norse – we have oodles.

Magic with gods and goddesses can run deep and be very profound and effective. What I have shown you here is to simply honor them and garner blessings.

Casting the Circle Proper

Because intention needs action, I then cast. I form a triangle by touching index fingers and thumbs to create a triangular/spade shape. I hold this before my navel to gather energy inward. Although it resembles Yoni Mudra, this is not yoga. It is a witchcraft gesture. It reclaims energy and centers me.

I then say, “Guard our hearts, protect us well. With this I cast my circle and start the spell.”

Because sound carries power, I ring the altar bell over the candle. Not just once either, I keep ringing it. I visualize energy along with the sound waves, a sphere, turning and growing clockwise. The energy grows until it’s boundaries touch where the guardians hold their posts, and deity watches. The space hums with power. Once the boundaries are reached with energy and sound, I stop ringing.

The Circle as a Living Sphere

I never picture the circle as flat. Instead, it expands in every direction, above and below. Because of this, I live within a sacred sphere, protected and whole.

This sphere exists outside normal time and space. Therefore, only what I allow enters, and only what I send out leaves. Consequently, the work flows clearly and without interference.

Closing the Circle After Work

When finished, I thank the guardians. With hands open, I say, “North, South, East, and West, all did come, all did bless. Go if you wish, stay if you will, either way, be at peace.”

I recognize deity with gratitude and perform the reverse, male deity first, then female. Now I make the male and female signs “Father Dark, God my Spark, Great Horned God – Mother Night, Goddess Bright, Mighty Hecate.”

I form the Triangle again and gather energy back. I say, “You guard our hearts, protect us well, we thank you! With this I close my circle and end the spell.”

I ring the bell again, visualizing the sphere collapsing counterclockwise until it shrinks to a spark. It winks out, scattering stars, poof!

Some say it is not a good thing, dangerous even, to let a circle degrade on it’s own. I agree. The energy that remains can be like a beacon to other beings, and as it degrades, something could enter that space. I always dismiss and close properly, even though my home and property are well-protected.

Final Thoughts on Calling Corners

So in recap and in order: it’s cleansing/clearing the space, striking the divine light, calling the corners, invoking deity/deities and casting circle.

I call corners not because it is pretty, but because it works. Circles create focus, protection, and the sense of stepping outside the ordinary. It keeps unwanted energies and vibrations from interfering.

Sometimes my circle is no larger than my desk. Sometimes it holds a full group, even encompassing most of my house. Always, it remains only as large as needed.

Beginners benefit most from circles. Calling corners offers structure and confidence.

So, if you’re wondering why your magic isn’t working or why things seem to be backfiring, look at the causes. This principle isn’t just about what you do; it’s about how you understand the connections between actions and results. And let’s be real, as witches, we love seeing those connections.

Cause and Effect: Karma, Baby

Let’s start with the concept of karma because that’s the juicy part of cause and effect. You’ve probably heard about karma and how it’s supposed to keep you in check. Well, surprise, surprise—karma is just cause and effect dressed in a cute spiritual outfit. The universe doesn’t need a morality committee to hand out rewards or punishments. Instead, it just follows the law of cause and effect: send out good energy, get good energy back. Send out bad energy? Well, you guessed it. Not exactly rocket science. That’s cursing and hexing because you’re a negative person, there is cursing and hexing for justice too. That is different.

I don’t necessarily subscribe to the “Threefold Law”, I shine more to East-Indian philosophy about Karma. But here’s the thing: this isn’t just about intentions or wishing for something to happen. It’s about actions. You can’t just wish for good things to come your way if you’re constantly putting out bad energy or doing shady stuff. The universe doesn’t give a damn about your good intentions if your actions don’t match up. For witches, this is a big deal. You might think you’re casting a harmless spell, but the causes you set in motion could have effects that surprise you. This is especially true when you get all sneaky with your magic.

Want an example? Okay, let’s say you’ve decided to hex your ex. You’re all fired up, ready to send out some bad juju. But what you might not realize is that you’re setting up a whole new karmic cycle for yourself. That hex may not come back to bite you immediately, but sooner or later, you’ll feel the effects of that cause. And don’t even get me started on how quickly things can spiral out of control when you start playing with dark magic without understanding the bigger picture. But also understand, cursing and hexing is not necessarily evil, again, sometimes it’s about justice or protection. Your attitude and intentions have a lot to do with how your karma unfolds. Personally, I’m more about return-to-sender spells and protection work. You could call return-to-sender a curse or a hex, but it’s more like returning unwanted mail without opening it.

Effect and Causation in Divination

Now, let’s talk about how cause and effect plays a role in divination—like in tarot readings. As a witch, I’ve had my fair share of readings (both for myself and others), and if you haven’t noticed, there’s a pattern. Tarot doesn’t just tell you about your future—it shows you the effects of your past actions. Every card you pull? It’s an effect. But there’s always a deeper story behind it, a cause that set that effect in motion.

For example, let’s say you pull the Tower card. Terrifying, right? Or maybe, just maybe, your spell was a little too vague, and the universe decided to interpret it in the most literal way possible. You want more money? Sure, let’s just get rid of the job you hate so you can find better opportunities. It’s all cause and effect at play.

This is why witches are constantly reminding each other to be specific with their magic. If you don’t give the universe a clear cause, don’t be surprised if it dishes out an effect you didn’t bargain for. Think of magic like setting up a chain reaction. You light the match (the cause), and the spark travels down the line. If you didn’t account for everything, you might end up blowing up the whole thing (the effect). It’s a reminder that magic isn’t just about asking for what you want; it’s about understanding the consequences of your desires. I recommend meditation before casting a spell.

The Experience of Channeling Energies

At first, channeling energy feels subtle. There’s a shift in awareness—like something deeper opens up. You may notice tingles, warmth, or a buzzing sensation in your hands. Often, you’ll sense energy moving from Earth, through you, and into your target.

As you progress, however, the sensations grow more obvious. Energy may rush up your spine, pour through your crown, or radiate outward from your heart. Sometimes, it feels like light; other times, like liquid or vibration. Still, no two experiences are identical. Each session is unique, depending on your focus and intention.

Even when it feels quiet or “flat,” something is still happening. So don’t doubt your practice just because it lacks fireworks. I even enchant my gardening tools and plants. I have a nosey neighbor that sometimes hangs while I’m out there. She always remarks what a great, lush garden I have, but then starts in with the bull___t. She says “you’re doing that thing again.” I tell her: “Oh, you mean that thing where I “talk to the universe” and somehow my plants grow faster? Total coincidence, I’m sure.”

I want to caution you too, and I speak from experience. Ever hear of spell-sickness or spell-fatigue? It’s real and I’ve experienced this myself. Drawing more energy than you’re spending, you’re going to be amped. There are times I felt like jumping out of my own skin, positively buzzing with energy. And, if you are spending more energy than you are drawing, you can end up feeling mighty drained. If you’re amped, go ground for a few minutes. If you are feeling drained, try drawing more energy, pausing your work for a moment if you need too. The good news is both conditions usually remedy themselves in about 5-20 minutes and we balance back out.

Before you do anything else, ground and center. This isn’t optional—it’s essential. Without grounding, you can scatter or absorb chaotic energy. So begin by rooting yourself. Imagine energy moving through your feet into the Earth. Then, pull Earth energy up into your body like drawing water through roots.

Next, breathe deeply and connect with your intention. Know why you are channeling energy in the first place. Are you preparing to enchant an object? Are you charging a candle for love? Maybe you’re cleansing your own aura. In all cases, clarity is power.

After that, use your breath and visualization to gather and direct energy. You might draw it from the elements, the Moon, your guides, or your own soul. Then, using your palms or even your voice, move that energy where it needs to go.

Practice makes perfect—there’s no substitute for repetition. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes.

Tools to Enhance Energy Channeling

Although your body is your primary tool, others can help. Crystals, candles, herbs, and wands are all excellent allies. For example, a quartz crystal can focus energy like a magnifying glass. Alternatively, an herb bundle can purify and redirect chaotic vibrations.

Meditation, too, remains one of the strongest tools we have. Through regular meditation, we increase focus, discipline, and energetic awareness. Over time, this creates a reliable inner state from which channeling becomes easier. I recommend starting with this alpha-trigger meditation. Achieve this state of brainwave and continue on to visualization of channeling energy.

Another powerful aid is sound. Chanting, drumming, or singing can move and stir energy into action. I love the use of singing bowls and other sound and vibrational tools. Not only does sound stimulate movement, but it also aligns your intention with vibration—an essential part of enchantment.

Above all, choose tools that resonate with your spirit. Your connection to them matters more than any book’s recommendation.

Common Purposes for Channeling Energy

There are countless reasons to channel energy. However, here are a few common practices among witches:

• Charging objects – You might charge a crystal with protection or a talisman with confidence.

• Spell craft – Channeling helps empower your spells, giving them extra strength and direction.

• Healing work – Whether for yourself or others, channeling energy can ease emotional or physical pain.

• Cleansing spaces – You can move stagnant energy out of your home using this technique.

• Manifestation rituals – When paired with visualization, channeled energy helps your intentions land in the real world.

Furthermore, channeling energy allows us to encode meaning and magic into physical matter. That’s the essence of enchanting—imprinting reality with sacred will.

Meditation for Energy Channeling

Meditation strengthens every part of energy work. Through it, you learn to quiet the noise and hear subtle shifts. So if you want to improve your channeling, commit to daily meditation. • You feel tingling, heat, or movement in your body.

• Your intuition strengthens.

• Manifestations speed up.

• Spell results become more consistent.

• Objects hold energetic “charge” for longer.

• You become more sensitive to others’ energy fields, do yourself a favor; stay away from stupid and toxic idiots.

Still, don’t obsess over symptoms. Focus instead on your practice and intention. Overthinking will only interrupt your flow.

Protecting Yourself While Channeling

While channeling is powerful, it also requires care. Not all energy out there is friendly. Therefore, create strong boundaries. Shielding techniques—like visualizing white light or calling on protective spirits—are essential.

Likewise, cleanse yourself after any intense session. Use salt, smoke, sound, or even a good shower. Remember, you’re not just channeling energy—you’re also acting as a filter. You don’t want to walk around feeling heavy or drained.

Lastly, don’t channel when sick, exhausted, or emotionally unstable. Always respect your own limits.

Ultimately, to channel energy is to build a relationship—with yourself, with spirit, and with the forces of the universe. It’s not about perfection; it’s about consistency. The more you practice, the more fluent you become.

Before we go too far, let’s pause on a word that pops up a lot in these conversations: liminal. It might sound like a word teachers use to stump seventh graders, but it’s actually pretty simple. Liminal just means “in-between.” Imagine standing in a doorway. You’re not in one room, and you’re not in the next room yet either. You’re stuck in the middle. That is liminal space, and magic loves it.

Crossroads are like giant outdoor doorways, neither here nor there, making them perfect stages for transformation.

Crossroads magic shows up in many traditions. In Hoodoo, they’re thought of as spiritual portals. Offerings may be left there, spirits may be addressed, and spell work can be discarded or completed. In ancient Greece, crossroads were sacred to Hecate, goddess of thresholds and sorcery.

In West African practice, Legba is the opener of roads, the one who grants or blocks access. Every culture that speaks of crossroads agrees on one thing: they are powerful and risky places. One wrong step and you might discover you’ve wandered farther than you meant to.

A crossroads can be a dirt or paved road, a sidewalk, dirt paths in a forest or cobbled walk-way in a graveyard. Anywhere that is traversed in 3 or more directions.

Crossroads in Witchcraft: Liminal Power

Crossroads in witchcraft are liminal spaces. They belong to no single road, which means they belong to all of them at once. They’re thresholds where rules blur. You walk into them one way and walk out another. It’s not just folklore saying this; even standing at one feels odd. Like the air itself is leaning in to listen.

Symbol of Transition

Crossroads in witchcraft also serve as symbols of decision. To stand at a crossroads is to face choice. Turn left, and one future opens. Turn right, and another closes forever. Magic at crossroads taps into this symbolic weight. It admits that we never escape choice, and that choosing is itself an act of power. Spells cast there often focus on release, direction, or courage to step forward.

Sometimes we take the wrong road, and that’s fine. Crossroads remind us that change always carries risk. Practices and rituals: crossroads aren’t only metaphors. They’re used in practical witchcraft.

Here are ways people have worked with them, including rituals you can adapt safely.

Spirit Communication

Because crossroads sit “in-between,” many use them to reach across the veil. The space works like a mailbox between worlds.

Crossroads Spirit Candle Ritual: At night, take a black or white candle to a crossroads.

Bring any appropriate offerings with you. Light it and speak clearly to the spirit you want to contact.

When finished, leave the candle stub behind. Walk away without glancing back, no matter how tempted you feel.

The act respects the crossroads as a place of passage. You send a message and step aside.

If you can’t stay until it’s fully finished (because, well, standing in the middle of an intersection all night isn’t always practical), here are the common approaches:

• Option 1 (traditional): Let it burn until it extinguishes naturally and leave all remains there. That’s the cleanest way.

• Option 2 (safety-first): Burn it for a set time, then snuff it out (don’t blow, since blowing is seen as dispersing your intention). Leave the partly-burned candle as your offering.

• Option 3 (modern adaptation): Burn it at home until a small stub remains, then carry the stub to the crossroads and leave it or light it and let it finish.

All three are practiced, but most old-school workers will tell you: let the flame go out on its own if you can. Never leave a flame unattended.

I charge and pour out a little authentic Florida water, not that silly commercial stuff, to clear the energy and as an offering (energy for the spirit).

If you are familiar with the spirit or if you knew the spirit personally in life, make a suitable offering you know they would enjoy. Crossroads in witchcraft offer many magical avenues toward goals and desires.

I like consorting with spirits; loved ones, friends, the Fae, and others. I will circle back eventually and write about that too. So many things to write about!

Crossroads in Witchcraft: Offerings and Rituals

In Hoodoo and other folk practices, like all crossroads in witchcraft are places for offerings. Food, coins, liquor, or flowers might be placed there to honor spirits or to ask for guidance.

Simple Crossroads Coin Offering: Carry three coins. At the crossroads, toss each one in a different direction. As you throw, say: “One for the past, one for the road ahead, one for the unseen.” Leave them there as payment for safe passage and unseen help.

The goal isn’t bribery. It’s respect for the forces moving around you.

Pacts and Deals

Crossroads have long been tied to tales of bargains, the most famous being bluesman Robert Johnson meeting a spirit for talent and fame.

Simple Crossroads Pact Ritual: Draw a small circle in chalk or dirt at a crossroads. Place a written promise of what you offer and what you ask in return. Add a gift, like rum, jewelry, or a handmade token. Speak your request clearly, then walk away.

Pacts are serious business. This isn’t for thrill-seekers or anyone who treats spirits like vending machines.

Crossroads in Witchcraft: Cultural Roots

In ancient Greece, crossroads in witchcraft belong to Hecate, the goddess of thresholds, magic, and the spaces in-between.

Shrines to her were often placed at intersections, where people left offerings known as Hecate’s suppers. Travelers hoped her light would guide them safely through the dark.

Hecate’s Supper (Deipnon): One of the oldest rituals for her was the Deipnon, (dee-EP-non), a meal given at the dark of the moon, often monthly. Families prepared strong-smelling foods like garlic, fish, and onions, along with cakes and drinks, and set them at a crossroads or their doorstep.

The meal was meant for Hecate and the restless spirits that followed her. Offering it cleansed the household of negativity, honored the goddess, and showed care for the dead.

Even today, some practitioners adapt this practice. A simple plate of food left respectfully at a crossroads can be a modern version of this ancient rite.

If I am going to leave an offering at a crossroads, I like to make everything biodegradable. However, at the end of rites and rituals, dinners should be gathered and disposed of.

Luckily, I love to cook, so Hecate’s supper is also our dinner too, and I make little portions for the offering. All of these items can be prepared a variety of ways.

I am also lucky to live on a cul-de-sac of three “streets”. One is my driveway, which is lengthy compared to most, another is the start of a short street about two blocks long. The last is another short street of about 3 blocks, connecting to other streets. It’s not a four-way crossroads, but works. Many favor a triple crossroads for working with Hecate or seeking her blessing.

I set a larger offering not in the middle but within a few feet of the curb, a little more inconspicuous.

Legba (Elegua)

In West African and Afro-Caribbean origins, Legba, also called Elegua, acts as the gatekeeper. Though the roots of this figure are West African, is mostly associated with voodoo, not hoodoo, though some overlap and influences can be seen.

He decides which doors open and which remain closed. He carries messages between humans and spirits. Without him, little else proceeds. I find this similar to many culture’s take on crossroads in witchcraft.

If you’re part of traditions honoring him, you call on Legba first. He unlocks the way. Outsiders often romanticize this role, but in truth, it requires knowledge, initiation, and respect.

The Devil at the Crossroads

For you haters out there, we don’t see the devil like Christianity does. Their devil is a 16th century invention, and a twisting of pagan archetypes. In more modern times, the devil is seen as a symbol of free will, freedom and transformation among other things. Hate to break it to you but all cultures have a similar archetype.

Not that we don’t believe in evil entities, we certainly do, as much as in good spirits and entities. Just because we are witches does not mean we are worshipping your devil. Most of our work is about healing, protecting, blessing and honoring. If you are going to hate, careful, that first step off your high horse is going to be a bitch.

Folklore also gave us the idea of the devil waiting at crossroads, ready to trade talent for a soul. This legend, especially famous in American blues history, echoes older tales of trickster spirits and dangerous bargains.

The devil at the crossroads represents temptation and the cost of desire. Whether you call it a demon, trickster, or simply fate, the lesson is the same: crossroads force us to face the price of choice.

So why do witches still care about crossroads? Because they remind us that transformation happens when we pause at thresholds. They are spaces where the veil feels thinner and magic feels close.

When you next stand at an intersection, literal or figurative, take a breath. Feel the pull of choice. Imagine the unseen forces that might be listening. You don’t need to leave offerings or whisper prayers to notice the energy. Just standing there with awareness is enough, however, they are a great place for all kinds of magic too.

Enchantment magic takes many shapes and forms, but for the purpose of this article I want to break it down. First, I teach my coven to enchant every ingredient or component, every step of the way. The little steps of enchanting as you go really add up to much more. But how does one enchant? Enchanting overall can be a complex undertaking, but here I want to give you the very basic technique. Enchanting is different than charging or cleansing, it’s telling something what to do based on its nature.

Wearing a crystal? Well, you get those baseline properties to benefit from. Charge it and there’s more energy, cleanse it and it functions better. Enchanting it, you can tell it what to do for you specifically for the most benefit.

Some people scoff at the idea of chanting. Oh yes, I just wave my hands, chant some words, and—poof!—my laundry still isn’t done. Truly, magic knows no bounds. Don’t listen to them. Just like a spell, sometimes it takes a little time to see the effects of an enchantment. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen quite quickly sometimes though.

How Do I Do Enchantment Magic?

In the sternum area, front and back, this known as “the seat of power”, “seat of rule” and the “seat of will”. We take in tremendous energy from the world around us in this area; the earth, the air, the fire, the water We take it in from trees, plants, crystals, rock, sound and emotional energy. All kinds of energy. We take in energy everywhere, but predominantly in this area. Your emotional energy plays a huge role too.

This, along with the energy we generate ourselves, is the power for enchantment magic. As we take in this energy, along with our own, it spins about inside of us, cyclonic in nature, very quick. Being left-handed, my turns Deosil, or clockwise. A right-handed person’s energy spins Widdershins or counterclockwise.

My left hand is more energy out, projecting. My right hand is more drawing and sensing. Both are capable of each, but you are dominantly one or the other. A right hander is just the opposite.

Whenever we are holding an item twixt our hands before the seat of will, one energy out, one energy in – now we are passing a current through it. We let our will and intention flow with it and tell an item what to do based on its nature. That’s where correspondences come in. I enchant my tarot cards and deck for tarot readings in this manner too. I have all kinds of things around my home and metaphysical shop I have enchanted.

Enchantments According to Correspondence

Mint corresponds with luck, money, travel, health, protection (and to honor Hecate). We wouldn’t want to tell it to do something contrary to its nature. Would you do something contrary to your nature? Probably not.

Keep in mind though, this is but one aspect of enchantment magic, specifically how to enchant a singular item. There are many ways to augment enchantments too.

Stacking Enchantments

So, as I mentioned, I teach enchantment magic to my coven to enchant everything, every step of the way. If you are going to make a clay doll, enchant the clay. Are you going to add three herbs of choice to the clay? Enchant all three herbs separately. If you are going to place a crystal in the bosom for heart, enchant that too. Call upon the metaphysical or magical properties useful to the working.

All those add up and then at the last, enchant the clay doll as a whole and complete work. In short, enchant the final product according to its ultimate purpose.

Learn about correspondence, take the time to look them up before choosing components or ingredients. Oak corresponds with fire among other things, while willow corresponds with water. Fire corresponds with manifestation, creativity, banishment and more. Water corresponds with healing, psychic matters and other things. There are also planetary days and hours, these too are correspondences. The lunar cycles and phases have correspondences. There are elemental correspondences, in fact, there are all kinds. The better your correspondence, the better your magic.

Enchanting Example

So let’s do some enchantment magic and work with some loose white sage. This herb corresponds with fire, purification and exorcism. Let’s say we want to cleanse our home and going to burn this bit in a cauldron. Hold the sage twixt the hands, attune to its energy. I tell the sage “awake”, and talk to it like a friend. Feel the energy of the sage. When I tune into white sage, it’s like how the sun feels on my skin, but in warm pulses. I see warm orange colors. Interestingly, white sage corresponds with fire.

Feel the energy of the world around you flowing through you along with your own. Flowing through the sage. Tell the sage to purify the home, to exorcise and banish all harmful and unhelpful energies. Take your time and give yourself to the process and enjoy enhanced success.

Here’s the thing: witchcraft is all about energy. And energy moves. It’s not static. Everything vibrates, and these vibrations influence everything we do. When witches cast spells, we work with these vibrations to manifest changes. Tools, candles, herbs, crystals—everything you use in your rituals carries its own unique vibration. When you understand how these vibrations work, you can consciously align yourself with the right energies for your spell work.

For example, when you pick up a crystal, you’re not just holding a rock. You’re holding a high-frequency object that vibrates in harmony with certain energies. You could say it’s like tuning a guitar. If you don’t tune it right, the music won’t sound good. But when you align yourself with the right vibrations, suddenly everything works in perfect harmony. Whether you’re using a wand to direct energy or a bell to clear the air, those vibrations matter. The more attuned you are to them, the more power you wield. I feel people’s vibrations change when I’m doing a tarot reading.

The Four Elements: Ancient Influences

Let’s be honest—Sumerian mythology didn’t exactly hand us a tidy four-element diagram. However, elemental forces still shaped their cosmic worldview. For example, the Enuma Elish tells of a universe born from a chaotic sea. So yes, water took center stage early, even if fire, earth, and air lagged behind.

– The Enuma Elish (Akkadian Cuneiform: 𒂊𒉡𒈠𒂊𒇺), often translated as “When on High,” is a Babylonian creation myth from the late second millennium BCE. Named after its opening line, it remains the only fully intact account of ancient Near Eastern cosmology.

Later thinkers, however, got more system-oriented. The ancient Greeks took these chaotic forces and said, “Let’s categorize.” Thus, fire, water, air, and earth became the standard model for explaining… well, everything. Feeling irritable? Too much fire. Can’t make a decision? Clearly an air imbalance.

Eventually, Hermeticism appeared and gave the four elements a spiritual upgrade. This tradition, pieced together from Egyptian mystery schools and Greek philosophy, absolutely adored symbolic frameworks. Hermes Trismegistus—yes, that Hermes—gets credit for highlighting the spiritual value of these elemental forces. The Hermetic Principles play a huge role in witchcraft, the four elements are naturally incorporated in them too.

Naturally, Hermetic thinkers didn’t stop there. They expanded the idea into alchemy, Kabbalah, and nearly every form of Western occultism. Because obviously, the elements are too convenient not to use for explaining soul paths, planetary magic, or Tuesday’s mood swings.

In short, the Sumerians didn’t invent elemental diagrams, but they absolutely sparked the concept. Later cultures just added drama, symbols, and fire—lots of fire.

Gnomes, Sylphs, Salamanders, Undines

I deeply respect Hermeticism—don’t get me wrong. But I suspect humanity knew about these elemental forces long before Hermes branded them. Still, Hermes Trismegistus did frame them with far more spiritual depth and philosophical flair.

In many magical traditions, especially Western occultism, people often refer to the four elements using mythic entities. So yes, you’ll see Gnomes (Earth), Sylphs (Air), Salamanders (Fire), and Undines (Water) pop up. Eventually, you’ll run into them in spell books or rituals—and probably ask, “What the heck is a Sylph?”

While the concepts are ancient, are these specific elemental beings? Not so much. Paracelsus, a 16th-century Swiss physician and alchemist, made them trendy. He didn’t invent them—but wow, did he run with the idea.

His Book on Gnomes, Sylphs, Salamanders and Undines didn’t just introduce elemental spirits—it basically became the textbook. Thanks, Paracelsus. Seriously.

The Four Elements in Witchcraft

So, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water aren’t just poetic—they’re essential. You literally can’t live without all four. Consider this: you’re made of minerals (Earth), you breathe air (obviously), you burn energy (Fire), and you’re mostly water (hello, 70% hydration).

Some practitioners also refer to a Fifth Element—not the movie. It’s Aether, or Spirit, and it ties everything together. It’s also referred to as “The Will” or “To Go”. So now, congratulations—you’ve got a metaphysical explanation for the five points of the pentagram.

In witchcraft, the elements move beyond biology. They shape your practice, your energy, your intention. That’s where the real magic begins. Here is a super-simple breakdown of elemental correspondences.

• Earth: Often associated with grounding, stability, practicality, and the physical world. It also corresponds with money, prosperity, fertility and growth among other things. Earth “rules” over jobs, employment and everything else listed here in the Tarot.
• Air: Represents communication, intellect and reasoning. It also corresponds with ideas, philosophies, justice and legal matters among other things. Air “rules” over intellectual struggles, and the conflict that arises from these things and our own truths in the Tarot.
• Fire: Symbolizes energy, passion, transformation, and the ability to ignite change. It also corresponds with inspiration, creativity, war, lust and passion among other things. Fire “rules” over careers and passions in the Tarot.
• Water: Linked to emotions, intuition, and the subconscious. It also corresponds with divine feminine energy, goddess, psychic talents and experience and dreams among other things. Water “rules” relationships of all kinds in Tarot.

When casting a spell, I often focus on one element more than the others and sometimes attempt a real equal balance of elements. A witchin’ tip from me; cascarilla (eggshell powder). Eggshell corresponds with all four elements and brings great strength to any spell.

Calling Corners and Casting Circle

I will write an entire separate article on calling corners and casting circle soon but just want to explain the elements in this concept.

The corners are the four cardinal directions and people will argue about which element corresponds best with which direction. Widely accepted: Earth (North), Air (East), Fire (South) and Water (West).

In my own practice though, Fire and Air are switched, Fire is East and Air is South. My reason for this is that the East is associated with the rising of the sun, enlightenment. As the sun rises its fire warms the earth, flowers open and everything seems to just come alive. It just makes greater sense to me.

The idea is to open a portal one at a time in each cardinal direction and call upon the corresponding element to come take its place. This is to help guard the circle and lend that energy to the work. You could also say to witness the work too.

These corners, these four directions and corresponding elements are also referred to as Guardians, sometimes Watchtowers. For these energies (and sometimes entities) a witch can conjure simple elemental energy, or elementals, angels, dragons or other spirits.

Four Elements on the Altar

In most witchcraft traditions and cultures, there are witch tools on the altar placed in the cardinal directions that correspond with these elements. See my article about altar setup to learn more. I use a special stone ritual bowl and salt for the North (Earth), a cauldron for the East (Fire), a ritual bell for the South (Air) and a chalice for the West (Water).

In addition, while an altar has an altar candle, sometimes candles that correspond to the individual elements are also placed in those corners. I do that too sometimes; it depends on the work I am doing. Choose corresponding colors for each candle, and many will carve a symbol for that element on the candle. A step further is dressing each candle with corresponding herbs and oils.

If you aren’t familiar, “fae” is a common term for fairies, faeries, the fair folk etc.

Gardens are special to me, I love watching plants grow and adore flowers. I appreciate the beauty of plants and watching bees and butterflies. I love how a garden changes over seasons, spring, summer and fall. Flowers come and go, the plants change.

I can’t forget how much I love fresh herbs, tomatoes, peppers and melons.  Our house has several other garden areas; roses, hibiscus, marigold, mums and many other flowers. I grow marigold, oregano and certain other plants among my veggies because the “bad bugs” don’t like them. Pesticide free!

I grow them for beauty; I grow them for magic. When it comes to the fae, the fairy folk, I don’t see it as something to contend with.

I see it as an opportunity to connect with more than just this mundane world.

Gardens, landscaping, the flower beds and greenery beautify my home and property but also enhance magical energy. The fae contribute to this and even helps things along.

Growing a garden, courting the fae and having a relationship with them creates harmony, balance and brings many blessings.

I will tell you the fae are not going to garden for you, put in the work. But when you do and honor them too, they will bless you back.

Learn to talk to them, thank them when you’re outside or gardening. Treat them as friends and over time they will treat you in kind.

Why Garden Magic Feels Different

I love altar work. But garden magic feels different, because outside space breathes and shifts all the time. Wind, rain, bugs, and birds add their own flair. This means spells change tone depending on place and season.

Think of Mabon and the harvest; give thanks. In the fall, my garden looks different than spring. Some plants are gone while Fall plants have risen. My other half and I have harvested all the tomatoes, we puree, chop, freeze and have tomatoes all winter.

When I work with the fae, when garden areas are properly consecrated and magically tended, we are blessed with a great harvest. Last year with five tomato plants we ended up with about nine gallons of tomatoes, lots of marinara sauce!

The fae not only bless the gardens and flower beds but are protective of this home and property. I thank them for their help, magic and protection frequently.

Sometimes I see little lights, and no it’s not lightning bugs and we don’t have fireflies around here. I see them before the sun is fully up, I see them long after dark and sometimes even during the day.

The lights, while small, are also different sizes and their movement is fluid and graceful, not quite like a bug. I should try and catch some on camera or video, but I wonder if they would mind.

Lastly, with the changing of seasons, think about it. Spring and a garden just bursting up with plants reaching for sun and air, roots seeking water speak to new growth. Summer to fullness and plenty, in the Fall, yet more to harvest and last harvest.

Samhain is special around the garden. We gather and honor the dead and one another with a fire near the garden and celebrate the season socially and magically.

Books on Garden Magic and The Fae

There is garden magic and there is faerie magic – you will find these often go hand in hand. Though, not all faeries are garden fairies.

One book I recommend checking out for a deep dive into faery magic is Forbidden Mysteries of Faery Witchcraft by Storm Faerywolf. Head’s up, it’s not the lighter fairy-lore but rich and powerful magic.

There are lots of books on herb magic of course. A great go-to book for herb magic (especially if you grow a lot of your own herbs) is Scott Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs. I love herb magic because, hands-down, herbs work.

Consecrating Your Garden

When I consecrate a garden, I keep things simple. First, I walk the space in a circle nine times, repeating a chant (which is also a declaration). At the same time I have blessed moon water from rain with a little blessed salt, I sprinkle as I walk my circles. Easy on the salt too, too much is not good for the soil.

Then I stand in the middle and invite energy that feels right for growth and harmony.

Lastly, I make the offering of enchanted crystals and charms in a mason jar which I place in the center. I mark corners and centers or lines of other spaces around the property too.

The fae seem to adore the shimmer. They also like breadcrumbs, shiny coins, and sweet milk. Some people leave honey, though I warn you, ants also accept honey. Stones with holes, called hag stones, earn nods as well. Traditional or odd, your offering matters less than the intent.

It does not need to look like a ritual out of a movie. Instead, it feels like setting boundaries with respect. The fae like rules, but only when they sense fairness. So, I declare, then I step back. Think of throwing a little party or hosting a friend for a special occasion.

Create your own chant, it doesn’t even have to rhyme, just be clear, thankful, respectful.

Why Consecrate?

I view my gardens as shared space, and desire all should get along.

Consecration is not a one-time act. I redo it each season. Sometimes storms blow through, or neighbors cut grass, or kids throw balls over the fence. Each event shifts energy.

By repeating consecration, I reset the stage. The fae expect this. They test if you remember. When you repeat the act, they nod, and they help again. Think of it like renewing rent with magic instead of money.

Every year, after the first tilling, I enchant a bunch of cascarilla (ground egg-shell). Eggshell brings great strength to magical workings, corresponding with all four elements. I scatter this and it’s mixed into the soil with the second tilling.

This brings not only strength the sacred geography, but the nutrients of the eggshell are beneficial to all your plants. I save and grind my own.

Here’s another magical tip for you; banana peels. Yep, magical properties include fertility, potency and prosperity. I save them, cut them into little pieces while fresh, freeze them.

I scatter these around too at second tilling and particularly place several pieces at the root base when I plant tomatoes. It helps your tomatoes go nuts.

All these little acts help consecrate your garden for magic and to honor the fae. Consider making your own magical mulch too!

In short, all that you do on your part helps create beautiful and meaningful areas for the fae to enjoy. This in addition to the many benefits for you. I find gardening healing and grounding. But now I also have sacred soil which has many purposes in witchcraft.

Why the Fae Matter in Garden Magic

The fae love boundaries and bargains. They seem to care more about how you act than how much you know. When I began practicing garden magic, I ignored them, and weeds went wild. Then I offered gifts. The garden shifted.

Fae do not vanish pests, but they balance them. Slugs still came, but birds arrived too. That taught me: working with fae means better flow, not perfect order.

While they may work with you, even the fae do not control all nature, they harmonize and work with it.

They can bless your magical herbs along with your produce plants. They can help protect your home and property and help look after your dogs, cats and local wildlife.

Outdoor magic in sacred geography spaces like a garden or other consecrated outdoor areas are enhanced by local energies. The fae can help your spell works and rituals, you can ask for their help and blessing if you have a good relationship with them.

Keeping the Balance

With garden magic, offerings become daily practice, not bribes. I tell the fae, “This is thanks, not payment.” They respect the difference. I never promise a harvest I cannot deliver. Instead, I ask for balance, and they answer with balance. That means some tomatoes may rot, but the peppers grow better. The fae laugh at human ideas of control. They remind us that growth comes with decay.

Working with the fae is important, not against them. Do not try to command the fae, that never works. Also, do not ignore them, that is not helpful to you. Only when you treat them like tricky partners will things flow. With garden magic, power grows when you share respect. You do not need to grovel, but you should not mock. Unless you want missing keys, spoiled fruit, or constant crow caws at dawn.

Last year I had a pepper plant grow up intertwined with one of my tomato plants. Still did alright, but what a surprise.

Humor Helps (So Does Patience)

I once left a shiny coin for the fae, and it vanished overnight. I thought I scored points. The next day, my gloves disappeared. Sarcasm aside, the fae love humor. They seem to enjoy small pranks as much as gifts

So, I laugh, then I place another offering. Gloves returned, and I had unexpected plants; sunflowers popped up far from where I originally planted. A pumpkin vine appeared when I hadn’t planted any except for the year before. Extra wildflowers grew up around and near the garden.

Garden magic works best when you keep patience. If you cannot laugh at lost tools, the fae will laugh for you. They are childlike in many ways. So, have a sense of humor.

Do not break your word, honor it, the fae have feelings and trust issues just like everyone else.

Growing with the Fae

I see garden magic as growth not just for plants but for myself. Working with the fae humbles me. It teaches that life thrives in messy, uneven ways. A consecrated space feels safe, but it also feels wild. The fae thrive on that edge between order and chaos, just like nature.

It also helps me provide for bees and other wildlife, beautifies the property … it’s just a win all around.

When I keep balance, they keep me guessing, and the garden flourishes with more color, energy and magic than I could plan alone.

Final Thoughts

Garden magic is not about perfect lawns or bug-free roses. It is about partnership with unseen neighbors. Consecrating space, making offerings, and treating the fae with humor and respect sets the tone. I walk with salt water, I leave crystals in jars, and I laugh when the fae play tricks. That is the deal. They keep balance, I make offerings, and the garden becomes magic itself.
