This card speaks to beginnings that feel urgent and alive. P.E.N.S.I. frames it as the first pulse of energy that asks for action, even before a full plan exists.

Ace of Swords, 1st Layer of Context: Position

As usual, we’re not into a tarot spread yet, but position is the first layer of context in P.E.N.S.I. Depending on the designated position of the spread, the Ace of Swords can take on many nuances. Past, present or future for example. The ace of swords could land in “what one hopes to achieve” or “the back of mind”. It could also land in “the view of others” or as a “crossing card.”

Once I have covered all the cards, I will start covering tarot spreads.

2nd Layer of Context: Element is Air

If you recall from the first P.E.N.S.I. lesson, air rules thought, speech and judgement. It’s what I call morals, scruples, truths and the headaches that always come with it. As soon as you speak your truth, there will be friction, even if it’s light. Light is good, but sometimes that friction is heavy too.

3rd Layer of Context for Ace of Swords: Numerology of One

If you recall from the first P.E.N.S.I. lesson, one is a start, a new or fresh start. In the reverse, it can also mean a dire need for fresh start. One is an inkling, the inception or beginning. Aces are up-rushing energy and desire. One is origin and It marks the first clear idea.

Fourth Layer of Context: Symbolism

A mysterious hand presents a single sword, raised and circled with a crown. The colors of the card and background are somber, as if to say; take it serious. Hanging on the crown are olive branches (huge magical history) for peace. But also palm branches, and a symbol of victory.

For most of us in this day and age, that would be hard to tell, granted. But there it is. And, the crown the branches hang from points to victory gained through clear, honest thought and self-control. Conversely, it is also a warning that this force can turn cutting or divisive when used without care.

The crown is seen as an invite to higher-thinking, a call to a higher state. Embracing personal truth leads to a greater connection to divinity.

Fifth Layer of Context: Intuition

Now, putting all the other P.E.N.S.I. layers together in a reading, you will surprise yourself with what you know. I consider the situation my tarot client is in, and apply it of course. Often, I know they have some personal truth that wants to come out. I tell them to approach speaking about it with some grace and forethought. Not every audience will appreciate your personal truth.

But I also know, based on the other P.E.N.S.I. layers, it is time for action, I tell my clients to strap in, buckle down and make it happen. Now is the time. And, it is amazing when you put the layers together in a reading the specifics that will come to you.

Ace of Swords: Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the Ace of Swords shows mental fog or misused words. Truth is present, but it is bent or avoided. Often, a person lacks the courage to stand up for or let their truth be known. Sometimes, the client is giving into pressure, and stifling their truth in order to get along. That’s not healthy either.

Sometimes the client is enduring cruelty or injustice or inflicting it. Again, consider the other layers of P.E.N.S.I. to get rich context in a meaning.

Sympathetic Decks

Most decks have very similar images compared to the Rider-Waite-Smith era cards. Today’s decks also have their own nuances. In my Witches’ Tarot by Ellen Dugan, the crown and branches are replaced with a hawk.. A sign, an invitation to higher thinking and being. The Starman Tarot and Deviant moon tarot decks have very different ace of swords symbolism and images.

The all do seem to stay on point and relative with this theme.

Lay the Ace of Swords reversed on your altar. Place a gray candle beside it. Sit quietly and name where confusion lives. Turn the card upright when ready. Light the candle and speak one clear sentence you have avoided. Let the candle burn down safely. Remove the paper when done.

The Ace of Swords does not soften truth. It clears the air so the path can be seen. Stand up, act, embrace your personal truth in a positive way and make it happen.

If you already read my first P.E.N.S.I. lesson, you know that each pip card tells a story through these five layers. The Ace of Wands is the first spark, the moment before creation takes form. It is the breath right before action, the match before the flame. Let’s walk through it together.

Ace of Wands, 1st Layer of Context: Position

The Ace marks the beginning of the Wands journey. It holds pure potential, raw, unshaped, and ready. This position is the initial spark that sets everything else in motion. It is the moment you first feel that rush of inspiration or see the path light up ahead. The Ace of Wands tells you the energy is available, but it is still waiting for you to use it.

2nd Layer of Context: Element is Fire

Fire rules the suit of Wands, and this card captures that energy in its purest form. Fire is passion, creativity, courage, and movement. It does not wait for permission; it burns where it wills. When this element appears, it calls you to act, create, and believe in your own power to make things happen.

3rd Layer of Context for Ace of Wands: Numerology of One

In most decks, the Ace of Wands shows a hand reaching from the clouds holding a budding wand. The hand represents divine opportunity, a gift from the universe. The wand itself is alive, growing, and full of promise. Mountains in the background speak of challenges ahead, but also potential for greatness. Everything in the image points to one message: the time to move is now.

This is the energy of busting a move on career changes and advances. Ace, one … think of first time home buyer, or buying a new home. Wands, fire, transformation – these often carry an energy of relocation, moving; big changes. It can also be the initial idea of starting a business. Great change and transformation is hand and has begun.

This is hard work beginning to manifest in reality. But it is also ready for change and transformation. It’s the beginning.

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

When this card shows up, your inner voice is asking for ignition. What idea, goal, or passion are you holding back from lighting up? Trust that first spark you feel; it is not random. Your intuition is already showing you where to strike the match. You do not need every detail yet. You just need to begin.

Reversed Meaning

When reversed, the Ace of Wands warns that your spark may be dim or misdirected. You might feel blocked, tired, or afraid to start. This energy often shows up when passion turns into frustration. Reversed, it can also mean wasted potential, too many ideas with no action. The fix is simple: choose one thing, commit to it, and do something small right now to rekindle your drive.

Sympathetic Decks

The Ace of Wands in the Rider–Waite deck during it’s era probably touched more on people making serious transformations particularly in what we would consider high-end careers. Remember that tarot and readings were for the more “well-to-do” in that era. The same holds true today, but while significant, tailor it for today’s average person. The Light Seer’s Tarot brings out its bold colors and motion. The Modern Witch Tarot highlights self-driven empowerment. The Tarot of the Divine adds mythic fire for spiritual artists. Choose a deck that excites you; the Ace of Wands loves color and enthusiasm. The style might be different in these decks, but the symbolisms are relative.

The deck I use professionally at this time, Ellen Dugan’s Witches’ Tarot, has a beautiful ace of wands, a hawthorn branch. Wands are all about manifestation and fire. You’ll notice a butterfly in the image in some decks too. This is because butterflies are an ancient symbol of transformation.

Hold the Ace of Wands card in front of a lit candle so the wand lines up with the flame. Feel that shared pulse of creation between the card and the fire. As the wax pools, picture the wand on the card sending that same power into your plan. When you’re done, tap the card once on the table and say, “So it burns, so it grows.”

Within P.E.N.S.I., the Eight reveals the importance of consistency. It carries the rhythm of progress made through repetition, the discipline that transforms raw effort into mastery. It reminds us that what we build day by day whether a craft, a career, or our own spiritual practice — is shaped not by sudden flashes of brilliance, but by showing up and doing the work until the work shapes us in return.

Pentacles belong to Earth, the realm of labor, stability, and tangible results. In the Eight, Earth shows its patient side, grounding us in the process rather than the prize. This card embodies the practical, deliberate energy of working step by step, allowing results to accumulate naturally.

Because decks that highlight artisans, builders, or craftspeople emphasize skill and effort, they bring the Eight of Pentacles into sharper focus. Moreover, symbolism tied to workshops, tools, or creation resonates strongly with this card, echoing its themes of patience, dedication, and the beauty of work in progress.

Finally, the symbolism and imagery appear to be quite uniform across the majority of tarot decks. In my Witches Tarot, the image is that of a witch working long into the night making every stitch count.

Tarot Spells: Eight of Pentacles

Because this is a Spell of Patient Mastery, begin by setting up your workspace with eight coins or small tokens placed in a line. Then, light a candle at one end to symbolize the spark of discipline and intention. Next, with each coin, state one small action or step you will repeat daily to move closer to your goal.

Finally, as you finish, slide the coins together into a pile to show that small steps ultimately accumulate into larger results. Carry one coin as a charm until the goal is met.

Spell of Grounded Progress: Write your desired skill or achievement on a slip of paper. Place it beneath a grounding stone such as hematite, obsidian, or smoky quartz on your worktable. Each time you sit down to practice, touch the stone and speak aloud, “Each step carries me further.”

When the goal is complete, bury the paper under a tree or in the earth to seal your growth and honor the effort invested.

Conclusion

The Eight of Pentacles shows that repetition is not drudgery but devotion. It is the steady rhythm of effort that turns learning into mastery, effort into excellence, and habit into power. With my P.E.N.S.I. method it is a lot easier to learn tarot. You learn its Position in a spread, its Fire Element, its Numerology, its Symbolism in motion, and its Intuition. This method keeps card study clear and steady and with P.E.N.S.I. you are making associations rather than endless memorizing.

Eight of Wands, 1st Layer of Context: Position

The Eight of Wands in a spread brings speed. It shows things moving fast. It often marks change you cannot slow. Depending on where in a spread, the nuances and context will change. Past, present or future? Or what is simply on the mind. Once I have covered all the cards, we will dive into spreads.

2nd Layer of Context: Element of Fire

3rd Layer of Context for Eight of Wands: Numerology of Eight

Remember from the first P.E.N.S.I. lesson, eight is like “halfway there” and always implies some struggle. Hard to get halfway there and look how much farther to go. But eight also speaks to some stamina too, In the eight, we start to wonder if should we go a different direction, or if we are going in the right direction. In the eight, we are often waiting for something before we continue.

4th Layer of Context: Symbolism

The eight wands fly through open sky. They never touch the ground and show clear direction, quick travel, and events in motion. They do look like they are headed somewhere specific though, and will find their target. Their arrival would be the end of their movement, right? So, this card screams a swift conclusion to a matter.

It also speaks to movement, possibly travel, especially through the air. When I notice this pops up with a six of swords, it really speaks to actual travel. Lastly, how about successful spell work manifesting? Oh yeah!

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

Trust the pull to move. Let the rush guide you. You can act with purpose while things open with ease. I often get psychic information with this card that says “hold on to your butt”, stuff is about to change because this situation is coming to a close. You will be free to act, or are free to act, depending on where in a tarot spread it falls. I often know it comes through an email or a phone call too.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the Eight of Wands slows down. Delays appear and plans may stall. Messages may miss or shift. You pause and check your path. You use this time to correct course and clear your space. If find when it comes up reversed, people feel so stuck in a situation that just seems to drag on and on. The real way to correct it is to plan and bust a move.

Sympathetic Decks

I find that almost all the decks I look at, regardless of era seem to show similar imagery. A bunch of wands flying in swift. Typically the skies are clear and the weather looks great and usually the scene in pleasant. I get a kind of “glad” feeling from the image, like being happy about this swift conclusion to whatever matter. Not that I might totally agree with the outcome, but glad to have a conclusion.

Enchant a black chime candle for banishing a block. Place the Eight of Wands reversed before you. Sit still and breathe slow. Write one delay or block. Set the note under the card. Let the card hold the issue while you clear space. Let the candle burn to finish. You flip the Eight upright when you feel flow return and let it remain while the candle finishes.

The Eight of Wands arrives when change moves fast. You decide the aim.

When I teach tarot, I use my  P.E.N.S.I. method. That stands for Position, Element, Numerology, Symbolism, and Intuition. Each layer adds context. We are not working with a spread here, so Position is only touched lightly. The other layers bring out the deeper meaning of the card.

Five of Pentacles, 1st Layer: Position

In a spread, this card often lands where a questioner feels hardship. Even alone, the card points to a time when resources run thin. You may feel cut off from help, even when support exists nearby. The Five of Pentacles shows where someone feels most exposed and most in need.

2nd Layer: Element

Pentacles are tied to Earth. Earth is steady, but here it feels cold and scarce. The element points to money, shelter, health, and material concerns. Earth reminds us that spirit and body are linked. If one suffers, the other feels it too. This card highlights where Earth feels like a burden.

3rd Layer of Context for Five of Pentacles: Numerology

Five represents change and challenge. It breaks the balance of Four, often in rough ways. With Pentacles, the number five can mean job loss, debt, or health struggles. It is movement that feels hard, not easy. Yet five also holds the seed of growth, because change forces new choices.

Remember the first P.E.N.S.I. lesson? With Five, think “sorrow, loss, regret”.

4th Layer: Symbolism

The classic imagery shows two figures outside in the cold, passing stained glass windows. This symbolizes exclusion, lack, or feeling abandoned. The window glows, reminding us that help is near, though not always seen. Bandages on the figures show pain, yet they still move forward. The snow underscores hardship, but also purity and lessons learned.

It’s interesting to me the figures are outside a church, they are not begging, but nor is anyone inviting them in. To me, this speaks to being ostracized, pushed out because of financial difficulty and hardship and sometimes by folk of similar faith. Everyone is a friend until you don’t have money.

But also, there are two figures in this image. You could read this as (and I often do) as one person alone, struggling and pushed out, and new friendship is struck. Almost as if the new figure comes along and says “you too?” Someone else in a similar situation comes along and new relationships are borne.

I would also have you consider the four of pentacles too. Were they not hanging on so tightly over fear of loss? Does that not suggest that to hang onto money, we can push others away? Stop socializing? So, when things go south with money, it seems natural that our usual circles withdraw from us, having withdrawn from them.

5th Layer: Intuition

When I read the Five of Pentacles, I sense it asks us to face loss without shame. Everyone goes through periods of lack. The card warns against pride that keeps us from seeking help. It also suggests that support is closer than we think, and our anxiety is greater than warranted. Intuition often brings the question: “Where am I refusing aid?”

In a spread, (position) can tell you a lot, we haven’t got to spreads yet, but we will.

Reversed, the Five of Pentacles can point to recovery. It signals help arriving, resources returning, or finding hope after despair. It may also warn of ignoring lessons learned, slipping back into unhealthy patterns. Still, reversed is often softer, showing that the cold is beginning to lift. I find the anxiety is still overblown, disproportionate.

Sympathetic Decks

The Rider–Waite deck  symbolism is similar with some older decks, however it can vary greatly compared to many modern decks.

With regard to the Rider-Waite symbolism, my Witches’ Tarot, shows a barren tree in the middle of a bleak winter landscape. The tiny flower in the corner of the image reminds us that things green again. The anxiety is disproportionate.

As with the Rider-Waite, the individual may feel isolated or shut out, and sometimes by people of similar faith. I advise people to not lose faith in themselves. Tighten the budget, let go of what you can.

In  P.E.N.S.I. if you read the first lesson, we know that coins/pentacles are always “social, family, money … always money”. So, this card agrees with the Rider-Waite, it looks like bleak times with social, family and money. But “spring” comes again.

Use this spell when you want to call recovery energy into your life. Place the card reversed with a green stone and a small key on top. Write one burden on paper and slide it beneath the card. Say, “I unlock relief, I welcome renewal.” Visualize warmth filling your space. Keep the bundle for a week, then move the key to your doorway and carry the stone for continued healing.

Closing Reflection

This card is not a verdict. It is a weather report. Cold now, warmer soon. The lesson is to look up, knock, and accept. I remind myself that asking for help is a skill. It grows with use. The Five of Pentacles invites that practice and promises a lighted door.

In this card, working through P.E.N.S.I. reminds us that conflict often leaves imbalance behind. Thought may win, but harmony does not. The wisdom of the Five of Swords lies in understanding the difference between being right and being whole, whether upright or reversed.

Five of Swords, 1st Layer of Context: Position

In position, the Five of Swords signals disagreement, tension, or a struggle for dominance. It appears when one side pushes beyond cooperation into personal agenda. This is not resolution, but fracture that still echoes.

2nd Layer of Context: Element of Air

As a card of Air, the Five of Swords works through thought and communication. Words become weapons and ideas become barriers. Air here disrupts rather than clarifies. Remember in P.E.N.S.I. air is thought but also communication. Often it is also the source of struggles with others over morals or personal truth.

3rd Layer of Context for Five of Swords: Numerology of Five

Remember, in P.E.N.S.I., fives are always “sorrow, loss, regret” and the five brings instability and disruption. In the suit of Swords, this disruption comes through disagreement and imbalance. The number shows the breakdown of harmony after a conflict.

If you haven’t read the first P.E.N.S.I. lesson, you should because it will help you makes sense of your fundamental deck (earth, air, fire, and water / pentacles, swords, wands, and cups.)

4th Layer of Context: Symbolism

The standing figure with gathered swords and the departing figures reflect separation. Conflict is technically over but not resolved. Symbols emphasize imbalance, pride, and the emptiness of hollow victory rather than cooperation.

In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, we see a man collecting swords while two figures walk away. The sky is unsettled and the ground bare. The figure holds more swords than needed, suggesting possession rather than purpose. The figures walking away give the impression of some humiliation and embarrassment.

It is as if the struggle mattered more than the outcome itself. The winner stands alone because the price of the win was connection.

Remember swords are a symbol of truth, but also a symbol of struggle.

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

Depending on other cards in a spread, the type of spread and nature of the querant’s needs, this card can take on nuances. However, the basic wisdom remains the same. Consider whether the fight matters. Intuitively, the Five of Swords feels like tension after harsh words. The mind replays events searching for justification rather than peace.

I often know the person I am reading for is holding onto a disagreement longer than necessary. Sometimes they have been right but still unsettled. When it’s not that, they are in a situation where someone insists on winning instead of understanding.

When I am reading and the five of swords presents, I see what feels like public humiliation and embarrassment. Letting go restores balance. Not every battle restores truth and some victories damage relationships. This is your chance to be a good sport, take the high road. Otherwise, they may just sharpen their knives for more.

The reader must also discern, is the client feeling humiliated or embarrassed, or did they humiliate and embarrass someone? I find it’s usually the client feeling humiliated.

For those seeking grounding after conflict, hematite helps settle scattered thought. I have often paired it with smoky quartz to release lingering tension. Chalcedony comes to mind too.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the Five of Swords shows reconciliation or the willingness to step away from conflict. Pride softens and communication may repair damage. Avoidance can also appear if the issue remains unspoken. This is more or less the generic-type info out there in internet land. What I see is public humiliation and embarrassment but now holding a grudge.

Sympathetic Decks

Decks with stark emotional imagery emphasize the aftermath of conflict especially well. Remember that all decks are sympathetic their era’s and their creators.

In my Witches’ Tarot by Ellen Dugan, the Five of Swords shows five swords pointing down. The points meet at a dragonfly, a symbol of air. Four fairies representing the four elements fly merrily around the sharp edges. What’s the real danger here? The sharp edges of the swords? Or is it the trickery of the Fae?

Very similar meaning and insights can be deduced from these symbols.

For this you will need the Five of Swords card, one gray candle, a small piece of paper and a black ink pen. A fire-proof dish helps.

Set the candle above or just behind the card. On the paper, write what conflict you are releasing. Keep it short. One or two sentences is enough. Fold the paper once, then place it beneath the five of swords facing upright.

Light the candle and sit quietly for a few minutes. Do not rehearse arguments. Let the tension settle.

Say: “I release the need to win. I release the need to be right. What is broken may rest. What is strained may end.”

Let the candle burn safely for a short time, then extinguish it. Leave the card and paper together overnight. The next day, finish the candle and burn the paper the next day.

Tarot Spell: Five of Swords (Reversed)

To restore peace after conflict and allow resolution to take place. You will need The Five of Swords card, one white candle, a small piece of paper, a black ink pen and a fire-safe dish.

Place the Five of Swords reversed on your surface. Set the candle above the card. On the paper, write what peace you allow to return. Fold the paper toward you.

Light the candle. Say: “I choose understanding over victory. I allow quiet where conflict stood. Peace returns where pride stood guard.”

Carefully burn the paper in the dish. When it is reduced to ash, turn the card upright. Extinguish the candle. Leave the card upright where you can see it until calm returns naturally.

In my teaching I use P.E.N.S.I., a layered method that keeps you from memorizing long lists of meanings. Position, Element, Numerology, Symbolism, and Intuition all add depth. Position is always our first layer, but since we are not yet in spreads, we only touch on it lightly here. You will find that when these layers connect, your readings become natural and fluid.

Four of Pentacles, 1st Layer of Context: Position

Position is the first layer of context in any tarot spread. Even though we are not placing this card in spreads yet, remember that its meaning can change dramatically depending on where it lands. In single card lessons, we simply note that position frames the entire reading and will become more important later.

2nd Layer: Element is Earth

The suit of Pentacles belongs to Earth. Earth rules social ties, family life, health, and resources, with money as the thread running through them all. When the Four of Pentacles appears, I watch for themes of stability, savings, or guardedness in these areas. Think about where you or your client may be holding tight in life, whether with money, possessions, or even emotions.

3rd Layer: Four of Pentacles: Numerology Two

Four creates structure, foundation, and consolidation. Combined with Earth, this signals security that can become rigid. In practical terms, it shows budgeting, saving, or keeping resources close. Sometimes this is wise discipline, and sometimes it becomes a fear of loss that blocks growth.

4th Layer for the Four of Pentacles: Symbolism

The crown coin shows thoughts dominated by money. The chest coin shows emotional attachment to security. The coins beneath the feet show grounding, but also immobility. The stone seat reinforces a sense of permanence, while the walled city suggests both safety and isolation. Taken together, the symbolism highlights the difference between stability and stagnation.

Now, that’s along the lines of the Rider-Waite book.

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

Intuition blends all the layers. Often I sense the Four of Pentacles when someone is saving, protecting what is theirs, or setting strong boundaries. Other times, intuition reveals clinging too tightly out of fear. I pause, look at the card, and notice any impressions about generosity, guardedness, or balance. This is where the card speaks most personally.

Four of Pentacles: Reversed Meaning

Reversed, this card often signals greed, fear of loss, or wasted resources. It can also show the positive side of letting go, becoming generous, or loosening restrictions. Sometimes the reversed Four of Pentacles points to shaky finances, overspending, or instability. Other times it signals that freedom and relief are possible when we release the grip and trust flow.

I always see and teach “Four” is like divine discontent  in a way, four is foundation, but more to come, more to build, more choices and potential headaches. Avoid the headaches or at least the severity. It’s a four, either way; upright or reversed.

This reverse type’s meaning is an “amplified”, not the mirror or opposite reversals as described in the first P.E.N.S.I. lesson. A reversed card’s position in a spread with other cards must be taken into consideration, the same as an upright card. We’ll get to that in future lessons.

Sympathetic Decks

In Rider–Waite deck contexts, the Four of Pentacles often reflected concerns about wealth and property. In more modern decks, the image may soften into lessons about balance, generosity, or security in relationships. My current favorite, the Witches’ Tarot, and has the same symbolism, just stylized different. Many decks have the same symbols, but reflect the nuances, world, perceptions of their creators, just stylized different.

What I see, personally with this symbolism (some tarot guidebooks touch on some of these) is the common Rider-Waite aligned meanings but more. My favorite current deck is  Ellen Dugan’s Witches’ Tarot,

The pentacle above his head, tells me the person is preoccupied with social/family/money things and always money per earlier lessons. Look how the figure clutches the one in front of him with both hands, hanging on so tight. I think that seems like insecurity and anxiousness over it, protective of it but perhaps in an unhealthy way.

I see the figure also stepping on, pinning down two pentacles with their feet, and two is polarization. It’s also about choices, perhaps difficult ones. I add all that up and it also seems about control, and to the point where it may be controlling them.

Doesn’t seem like a particularly happy or peaceful state about social, family and money. I detect all kinds of things with clients too. My advice though is usually the same; health boundaries include financial ones too. And/or, take the time, look down the road and include yourself in your math, your wellbeing. And, if in a spread, the position and context of the other cards tell me even more.

This card highlights everyday budgeting and practical boundaries. Always connect the layers of P.E.N.S.I. to the reality at hand.

Tarot Spell: Four of Pentacles

For upright spell work, place the Four of Pentacles beneath a small dish of salt and a coin. Light a green candle dressed with olive oil and speak your intention for financial stability, healthy boundaries, or steady work. Visualize the salt protecting your resources and the candle building strength. Always snuff candles rather than leaving them unattended.

As a card of Air, the Four of Swords works through the mind. Because thoughts have been active, sharp, or strained, air here now asks for quiet. Mental noise must settle before clear thinking can resume. Remember in P.E.N.S.I. air is thought but also communication. Often it is also the source of struggles with others over morals or personal truth.

3rd Layer of Context for Four of Swords: Numerology of Four

Four brings structure and stability. In the suit of Swords, this stability comes through stopping motion. The number shows the need to create a firm boundary around rest so the mind does not continue to fracture. P.E.N.S.I. also shows eight to be ‘half-way there” and always implies some struggle.

4th Layer of Context: Symbolism

The resting figure and still swords reflect suspension. Conflict is no longer active. The space itself becomes protective. Symbols emphasize containment, silence, and safety rather than movement or defense.

In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, we see a knight, resting on his sarcophagus. He is alone in a quiet place, inside the church. His own sword lay resting or nearby and three more swords hanging quietly. Notice he is in his armor, ready for battle, but this post is a moment of deep reflection, squaring things before battle.

It is as if he is wondering if the fight is worth it or right while resting from a previous battle. The knight needs rest to recover, but makes use of this period to reevaluate his next course of action.

Remember swords are a symbol of truth, but also a symbol of struggle.

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

Depending on other cards in a spread, the type of spread and nature of the querant’s needs, this card can take on nuances. However, the basic wisdom remains the same. Take time out. Intuitively, the Four of Swords feels like lying still after exhaustion. There is relief in not having to decide or respond. Insight returns when effort is released.

I often know the person I am reading for has an old wound or perhaps surgery that has never healed. When it’s not that, it’s a chronic underlying health condition. Either way, I know if they should not be afflicting themselves with busy-ness. We don’t want that condition to exacerbate and overwhelm them.

Rest and healing are what they need, and time out to do so and practice self-care. Now is not the time to be in battle.

For those seeking healing, all quartz are great healers, but try golden healer, also known as the golden ray. In addition, I have often paired it with amethyst. Of course, don’t be shy about seeking professional medical advice.

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the Four of Swords shows resistance to rest. The mind keeps moving despite fatigue. Recovery is delayed, which can lead to stress or mistakes. Ignoring the pause weakens future action.

Decks with strong monastic, medieval, or minimalist imagery emphasize the withdrawal and recovery themes of this card especially well. Remember that all decks are sympathetic their era’s and their creators.

In my Witches’ Tarot by Ellen Dugan, the Four of Swords pictures a woman, walking outside the city walls, dragging one sword while holding pussywillow in the other arm (a symbol of healing). Also, the other three swords are lined up leaning against the wall.

She is alone, taking a walk out side the city, laying down the struggles. Very similar meaning and insights can be deduced from these symbols.

Place the Four of Swords reversed on your surface. Set the candle above the card. On the paper, write what keeps you from resting. Use honest words. No polish. Fold the paper away from you.

Light the candle. Say: “I release the need to push. I stop running my mind into the ground. Rest happens, I allow it and release resistance to it.”

Carefully burn the paper in the dish. When it is reduced to ash, turn the card upright. Extinguish the candle. Leave the card upright where you can see it until rest comes naturally. Know that you can take time out from people and being busy and rest.

4th Layer of Context: Symbolism

The card’s decorated arch suggests a threshold. It marks the crossing from effort to ease. Also, figures celebrating in the background show shared joy, not solitary gain. Togetherness and belonging are highlighted.  This is the typical blah you will find in many books.

5th Layer of Context: Intuition

When this card appears, notice where your life finally feels lighter. Your spirit may want to breathe and enjoy the present. Also, trust that your joy does not need to be earned twice.

When I put all the above together, I know they are celebrating a big-ticket item, there’s cause for celebration. Could be a wedding, an addition to the family, perhaps a child, paying off a mortgage, buying a new home, or landing that dream job!

Reversed Meaning

Reversed, the Four of Wands suggests hesitation in celebration. Also, you may fear the good moment will not last. Likewise, you may struggle to feel at home or at ease. Therefore, connection needs time and honest presence.

But sometimes, that’s not what I get, I get a “surprise celebration”, so you should still act surprised!

Likewise, decks with warm colors, village scenes, or festival imagery work well with this card. Also, it resonates with decks that show shared joy, meals, and welcoming spaces. My Witches’ Tarot Deck has four lovely ladies in dresses that correspond to the elements, dancing merrily.
