Types of psychics, and the power of the mind; what an interesting topic. There are many psychic gifts, and a lot of people wonder if they are psychic. I believe everyone has at least some ability, but most people never learn to cultivate it. Here, we’ll explore the different types of psychics.
Many types of psychics engage in the practice of divination. You could say its acronym is ESP. Extra sensory perception is how one gathers information, data, through paranormal means. This is beyond the five senses of touch, taste, sight, hearing and smell. ESP has many forms, and we’ll explore them all: precognition, retrocognition, clairvoyance, telepathy, telekinesis, psychometry and empathy. There are also weird little talents that are hard to put in a box or label.
By understanding types of psychics and psychic gifts, you may come to understand your own better. In future articles I’ll be posting exercises for psychic development. There is also mediumship which is receiving data or messages from the spirit world. There are three kinds of these types of psychics too: clairsentient, non-incarnate and physical. A medium may experience one or more of these talents. Many people can experience more than one type of psychic gift or talent.
Clairsentient, these types of psychics receive data or messages directly from spirits. They can simply hear them, sometimes see them, but like conversation. Some of these mediums allow partial possession to channel a sprit and allow it to speak through them.
A non-incarnate medium access data and information through signs and portends. This could be tarot cards to throwing the bones, patterns in tea leaves, clouds, birds, beasts and other physical things. Yes, this is the spirit world talking too.
When I am doing tarot readings, I throw the bones, read the cards and sometimes the beloved dead come through. Once in a great while I see them to a degree but mostly see them in my mind and get a brief message. Happily, I get enough specifics about them to know (and so my client knows) it’s them. Sometimes I see signs and I know they are still grieving. “I am sorry for your loss” I say, and here come the tears. But in that emotional moment, it somehow makes it easier for me sometimes to receive messages. This is what I mean by experiencing one or more mediumship type of psychic gifts.
Physical mediums, more common types of psychics, are the third type of medium. These are messages sent through physical sensations in the body. Sometimes feeling a reassuring hand on the neck. Feeling a finger in the ear as if to say “listen!”, tingling sensations. All of which spark specific thoughts and notions that when put to the test appear to be correct.
Ventre Loquis; Latin words that mean “You speak through the belly, or gut”. Many of us have experienced Ventre Loquis. This is the spirit world speaking through the gut. Ever go to cross the street, you see someone, “oomph”, a negative gut feeling and you choose not to cross? You experience “oomph”, and choose not to get into that car, go through a door, or get on a plane. How about when you meet someone? Pay attention to Ventre Loquis because it can keep you from harm. This is also the origin of the word “Ventriloquist”. Yes, if you’ve experienced this, you’re a type of psychic, a physical medium.
The phenomenon of receiving messages or data by touching or holding an object is called Psychometry. Psychometry is also referred to as “object reading”. Common items used for this practice include rings, photographs, and other personal objects. In some cases, even the mere presence of the person associated with the object can trigger visions or images in the psychometrist’s mind. This may correspond to actual events, sometimes even those that are yet to occur in the subject’s life.
It is believed that entering a state of lowered consciousness, often resembling a trance, can enhance the accuracy of psychometric readings. However, the visions that arise are often random and not reliable enough to be of significant practical use. One of the pioneering institutions in studying psychometry was the Parapsychological Institute of the Rijksuniversiteit te Utrecht in the Netherlands, which explored its potential for locating missing persons or objects and aiding in criminal investigations.
Like I said, there are weird talents hard to label or put in a box. I can often sit where someone else has been sitting for a long while and see things. Often, I see their house from a viewpoint of where they often sit. Sometimes I see activities they do while sitting.
For these types of psychics, this psychic talent is the ability to perceive information at a distance. This includes through time and space too; past, present and future. The date could be about an object, place, person or situation. Sometimes clairvoyants hear and feel things too, which is called clairaudient. Additionally, some feel emotional energy and are often referred to as empaths. Empaths tend to suffer a lot, because of compassion for others. Read my future article about surviving psychic empathy.
Other types of psychics are clairsentient. This is the ability to feel physical sensations and emotions, experience tastes or smells by supernormal means. That sound like a physical medium to you?
You begin to understand, all these psychic gifts and psychic talents overlap and overflow together. It is next to impossible to nail down and define any one talent down a hundred percent.
Clairvoyance is often an umbrella term used by many when trying to describe many psychic talents. A physical medium gets impressions or date, past, present or future and could be called clairvoyant for instance. A tarot reader too, could be called clairvoyant, if they aren’t a cold reader. In the past, I liked busting cold readers. I’d sit down, they would ask “what’s your question?” and I’d say, “you tell me”.
Learing tarot and practicing tarot is a great way to develop your psychic gifts. Occasionally I teach classes on tarot at our store. We offer in-person tarot readings in our metaphysical shop but also provide secure online tarot readings. I teach my coven to not let our clients ask “the question” but let’s let the Universe speak. This tends to answer their question and many other questions. About halfway to almost done, then I ask the client if anything remains they want clarified. Not letting them ask the question upfront keeps tarot readings honest. Spiritual guidance should be honest, don’t you think?
Precognition is a big part of divination and Retrocognition can be too. These types of psychics glean messages and information from the future or future past. Both play a big role in divination as do many psychic talents. In divination it is the attempt to glean that information and convey it to another. But often, these two psychic gifts happen spontaneously.
Again, with overlapping psychic talents, a retrocognitive psychic will touch an object and discover where a will might be hidden. But isn’t that the same as a non-incarnate medium or the psychic gift of psychometry?
While precognition is about the future, retrocognition is about the past. Ever hear of past life readings? Yep, that is a form of retrocognition. Now, the reader may employ tarot, bones or curios, crystal balls or other tools. See? All psychic gifts and talents overflow into the art of divination.
Here are two psychic gifts that can be quite astounding. Telepathy is communication mind-to-mind and often happens spontaneously in dreams. There are some witchcraft practices to enhance or augment this talent.
Telekinesis is the ability to move objects, bend spoons etc. with the mind and is quite rare. There of course, exercises that help develop this ability, but will take tremendous effort. I think one day as mankind continues to evolve, telepathy and telekinesis will become more common and powerful. Telepathy and telekinesis are two forms of psychokinesis, or “PK”.
Together, collectively ESP and PK are often referred to as “Psi”. A term collectively encompasses all kinds of paranormal practices and phenomena. The term, psi, is a letter in the Greek alphabet, but as applied to psychic phenomena. It’s a term first coined by psychologist Robert Thouless. The term also encompasses dreams, intuition and even hallucinations.
While there is no end of skeptics, critics and sadly, charlatans and fakes, yes this sort of thing does exist. I find it disheartening that so many try and take disadvantages of others for money. This is also why I don’t let my tarot clients ask, “the question” and why I have all my readers and coven practice the same. The noble art of true divination must be kept honest.
