It’s entertaining, isn’t it – the thought of getting a psychic reading. But some people wanting a tarot reading from a psychic are suffering. They have grief, have lost someone. Perhaps they are stuck in an abusive relationship or in the middle of a divorce. Maybe they or someone they love is struggling with addiction.
I’ve been reading tarot and other forms of divination for decades. No matter how many times I do a form of psychic reading, the other person’s emotions hit me. Sometimes it’s heart wrenching. I use a little levity to lighten it up though and no small amount of encouragement. How do you separate the ego from the reading? Compassion, of course.
But that’s what burns me up too, sure it’s cool to read for people. Oooo, aaaa – how mystical. But while there are great readers of all kinds and folks with fantastic psychic gifts there are also fakes.
I used to love going around and busting tarot and psychic readers. I would go in and sit down for a psychic reading and they’d ask, “what’s your question?”, I’m all “you tell me”. Then I would see if they were worth their salt. It was easy to detect if they were a cold reader too. That’s someone who has no psychic talent or never chose to develop it. They simply rely on memorized keywords from a book that came with their tarot deck.
I don’t play that way, and I will tell you how I do it and how I teach people to do it. Yes, I teach classes on tarot and a lot of other things when I’m in our metaphysical shop, come visit! Connect with us for more on Instagram, Facebook (Meta) or TikTok.
Meaningful Psychic Readings
I teach my coven and my students to tell their clients not to ask, “the question”. Instead, let the Universe speak in psychic readings. This tends to answer not only “the question” but many questions. I have the reputation to back it up too. I am so proud of my stepdaughter, coven peeps and students. I do encourage clarifying questions toward the end, should anything feel unanswered.
But getting a psychic reading is more than just impressing someone because you “know something”. Sure, I wear goth clothing and metaphysical jewelry, but I do that every day. Looking or sounding mystical is great, but not nearly enough.
Truly helping someone requires empathy and compassion. But you also must know when to hit them upside the head with dear-sweet-truth. Like a double-edged sword it cuts both ways, it hurts but it heals. I call it the iron-gauntlet-box-of-chocolates routine. Whack! I hit them with truth, then there are often tears. I give them a moment and then console them, encouraging them to get better. It’s a taste of tough love much of the time.
I’m not going to get all ethereal on you, I don’t need new age music to go with the reading. Hopefully you don’t choke on all the sage I burn. I guess what I’m saying I’m not here to kiss your arse or blow smoke up it.
I actually feel irritated when someone asks me for a psychic reading because they wish to be entertained. While some might find me entertaining, I am not in business to entertain. Though, I have sign, for legal reasons, I keep in our tarot room or flash when I’m doing online readings. It says, “Readings are for entertainment purposes:” Which is funny, sometimes I am highly entertained.
My Psychic Readings
When I read, though my clients don’t realize what I am doing, I throw the bones first. In a half-hour reading I do that and do two pulls on the tarot. Usually, a Celtic cross tarot spread and then a horseshoe spread, sometimes called “checking the direction.” That last tends to yield two pieces of great advice. But I do these “layers” and see repeating patterns and tells me a lot. It’s like confirmation after confirmation. Even in a fifteen-minute psychic reading, I still throw the bones and pull the tarot. You’d be surprised at what can happen in fifteen minutes. This also really helps me help someone who’s in denial. Though, if someone insists on remaining in denial, I wrap it up and I’m done. You can lead a horse to water, right?
I often give them a few minutes to compose themselves, fix their mascara. Yeah, I keep boxes of tissues and backups in the tarot room. Most of time the psychic readings are really moving. I’m moved. I laugh and cry with my clients and love it when I feel their sense of relief.
One of the greatest satisfactions for me personally? When I see them come back lighter, head up, smiling. I see them now walking in their own power and authority once more. That brings me joy.
I’ve made a lot of friends over the years doing readings, perhaps one day I’ll do one for you.
