You’ve probably heard “words have power” before, and from any one of many sources. Words have more power than most people think too. The metaphysical reasons are also numerous.
To really understand how words have power, let me help break it down into manageable pieces.
Behavior, emotions, perceptions, predispositions, perspectives all influence the power of words.
Even assumptions play a role here. If one person tells another I don’t trust that person, that person just created a sort of filter on the perception of the person they told. That person cannot now help but see that this allegedly untrustworthy person the same. Their perception has been altered.
Someone could tell you they don’t trust someone simply because they don’t like them. The statement could be born of jealousy or anxiety perhaps. There is nothing in the scenario that is concrete and says you can’t trust that person. But see, mere speculation has now altered perception and energy.
This, of course, is just a small example of how words have power. The consequences of the words we utter can have phenomenal, amazing effects. But they can also have terrible, devastating or even destructive effects.
At the end of this article, I’ll provide you a couple of simple techniques to negate or neutralize harmful energies.
Wise witches that have empathy and compassion are mindful of this. They are also mindful that the words begin with thoughts and emotions. They also learn the art of negating harmful thoughts and words. We also know a witch’s laugh has a lot of power, be careful of how and why they might laugh at you.
I have this conversation a lot in our metaphysical store, especially after tarot readings, come visit! Connect with us for more on Instagram, Facebook (Meta) or TikTok.
Words have Power Fueled by Thought & Emotion
In the above example, the person stated or suggested to another to not trust that other person. What consequences can you think of? Perhaps it costs a job opportunity, connecting with the right person for a long-term relationship. On some level, even if it’s subconscious level, that hurts. Why doesn’t he or she trust me? What have I done? All over a simple statement.
Words have power and yes, sadly, sometimes people do deliberately do us wrong. But if we make assumptions, based on fear or anxiety, if we automatically assume the worst, you begin to see how far this can go.
Ergo, one of the most important aspects of mind-training for a witch is mastery over their emotions and perceptions. I teach my coven to “reserve and observe”. Wise folk know there is more than one side to a coin, the only angles we see are those that face us or that we face. Reserve judgement until more is known, never make assumptions. Meditation for power and clarity helps with that.
I often resort to divination practices like pendulum, crystal ball or tarot decks for clarification. Speaking of, many people don’t like to read for themselves, understandable. If you need, we offer in-person tarot readings at our store and online tarot readings. All appointments in person or online are booked on our website. You’ll always have the same real people that you can see and trust.
Understand, the Hermetic Principles of Cause and Effect, and also the Law of Attraction warrant some caution when it comes to words. Especially for a witch. I always avoid saying “I want” or “I need” especially when casting spell. You don’t want to be forever wanting or needing, do you?
Words Have Power in Magic
I teach my coven to know in the heart, write and speak it into existence with power and authority. So It Is, So Mote it Be, Abreq Ad Habra are commonly used at the end of speaking a spell or incantation. Remember though, it begins with thoughts and emotions. Very important, if not critical to magick is speaking it like it already is.
This is also important in loving yourself correctly for self-esteem and self-confidence. It is so important for a witch to love him or herself. I often tell people, witchcraft without spirituality is like a glorified hobby at best, a loaded gun at worst. This is one reason many ask “am I cursed?“, when they may have “cursed” themselves.
There are many ways words have power to put this principle into effect in your life to attract or manifest what we desire. Just be wise about your choices. We can also use this on someone else’s behalf. Here are some concepts to further you along.
Use Your Emotion – I’m not saying just cut loose with no thought to the words. Perhaps those emotions are painful, we don’t want to harm anyone if we can help it, right? But yes, harnessing the power of your own emotions as you speak is key for greater manifestation.
Consistency: Affirmations – Being consistent, daily with practices like positive affirmations go a long way toward manifesting.
Amplification – Like with daily affirmations, now consider hourly. Or in the case of writing things down, there are many methods often used when working with the law of attraction too. These can easily apply to what you speak. You speak aloud what you are writing down as you write. You can, of course, augment words with sympathetic magic; crystals, herbs, wood, stone, dolls, candle magic etc.
How to Negate Harmful Thoughts or Words
Complaining, we all do it right? Another reason to consider words have power. What I want you to notice is that the more one complains, the more they notice what they complain about. That’s reason enough why I tell people “Don’t love your sickness”.
How often have I seen people say this person is a “pain in the ass” or “pain in the neck”? Now, lighthearted and in jest, probably no big deal. But I notice when there is passion, emotion and they’re serious, they often develop problems in those areas, indigestion, hemorrhoids, neck pain, strep throat etc. This can also create or add effect at a group phenomenon level too.
So, what to do if you or someone you care about blurts out something potentially harmful? No worries, there are many ways of dealing with this effectively. What you do is shatter the energy pattern or formation.
Visualization is key, I suggest meditation, particularly start with this alpha state meditation and then practice visualizing from there. Here are two methods of negating verbal energy.
Incineration – I visualize lightning, striking the undesired image or outcome until it’s just some ash, nothing more. Sometimes I use straight-up fire instead.
Also, see the unwanted outcome like a news article, a social media post, etc. Use your dominant hand’s index finger (the original wand) and “X it out”. You might see the pieces flying out and away disappearing in the nothingness. Or paint a giant thick X on it so no one can even see the image. I often change the conversation too, to see if I can get them of their own accord to come to reason or reconsider. To take it back in a way.
Conclusion
You get the idea, but I find I do this a lot around some of my crazier, loose friends. I also discreetly do this during tarot readings in the conversations that come up to help my client out. Remember your words have power, let them be beautiful.
This is such a powerful post. Words are very important in so many facets of our practices.
Yes, that’s also why I teach “authority voice” to my coven. You don’t want shy, insecure, fearful … you want authority, power, confidence, faith. 😉 Blessings.
